There is space for two large restaurants within the bowl i.e. repeating the business level on the east side of the stadium.
Secondly, the whole facade of the podium, was intended for commercial/retail/museums. While the land on the Granger Bay side can be connected to stadium with a development. These rezoning issues are not special things but simply creating the normal environment for a stadium to operate in and of with it bring back SAIL/Stade de France who were right not to take up a 30 year lease without a normal stadium environment. |

Will their be a new operator any time soon? Surely the city is not going to be the permanent operator |

For sure. Once the rezoning is sorted out they will go back to the market.
Its like expecting SAIL/Stade de France to operate a restaurant building for 30 years without having zoning to sell any sort of drinks/food. |

So a year max?
Lets just hope that whoever takes over from the city is equally as competent or better then Sail Stadefrance was. |

I don't see why SAIL/Stade de France would not return. They were absolutely right not to sign the lease without rezoning, municipal costs, transport etc. being finalized.
Probably the best thing that could have happened was for them not to sign. Rezoning is in the hands of the province, unlikely pre election, but has to go through within a year. |

Sail Stadefrance can't return since the company no longer exists.
The City amazes me. It seems is if they are taking forever to complete the rezoning process. This should be on their 'ASAP' list. |

Rezoning sits with province as a "final decision" but yet dragging feet.
SAIL/Stade de France is an entity yes but when things are fixed for them to operate, it should be fine to form an alliance again. |

Then clearly they do not see the importance of rezoning. It was already a big mistake, we have since gotten over it yet still almost a year later, things have not changed.
We would hope, but chances of that is close to zero. If Sail Stadefrance had plans to return, something would have been said from both the executive chair and City, or the company would not have wrapped things up as they did. We need professionals operating the venue ASAP. |

True, although it is a pity.
The city loves to mention that the former operating company pulled out of signing a 30 year lease due to issues regarding zoning, but then they still don't sort the zoning out. The sooner the tender goes out for a new operator, the better. The new contract will also require the operator to manage the stadium and park (events etc) yes? |

The tender will not go out for some while, not perhaps even within 3 year. If WPRU negotiations proceed and go well, that will be the first aim.

Cape Town could unseat Hong Kong
06 Wed, Apr 2011 Print Send to a friend Tourism in South Africa would receive a massive shot in the arm if Cape Town unseats George as the venue for the Rugby Sevens World Series. Rugby Sevens has received a massive boost now that it has been accorded Olympic status. There is a seismic shift that is not apparent yet in the traditional heartland of countries like South Africa, immersed in the tradition of the 15-man game. Rugby Sevens is set to explode as nations worldwide get involved because of the Olympics. The World Series is played in eight cities over six months and the big daddy of the tournament is the highly successful Hong Kong Sevens. Over 20 000 big-spending overseas visitors descend on Hong Kong to join the locals as 40 000 dance, drink and perform over three days at the end of March in what can only be called the mother of all parties. Hong Kong Sevens is much more than just the rugby. It attracts markets such as old buddies who would go on hunting or fishing trips or girls looking for a hen party with a difference. Cape Town is one of the SA towns along with George that has submitted tenders to the International Rugby Board to host the SA leg for the next five years. The average visitor to the HK Sevens earns R945 000 a year and the event has a major positive impact on the economy. An astounding 99% of them say they will recommend the event and 86% say they will return next year. However well George has done so far in hosting this event, only Cape Town can unseat Hong Kong as the world’s premier venue for what has become among the world’s fastest growing sporting codes. They haven't started hiring tons of new people. Where there were SAIL staff who could fulfil roles they are being used.

Cape Town stadium to rock and roar
![]() June 23 2011 at 11:04am Comment on this story This is what Cape Town stadium will look like for three days in December - with a full-size "rock festival" stage to the left. It's a big reach, and most people's initial reaction is “They'll never pull it off!” - but the enthusiasm with which city and provincial authorities, and commercial stakeholders, have embraced the idea of a three-day bike festival in the Cape Town stadium shows how keen they are to get some mileage out of the city's palest pachyderm. The plan, hatched by former politician Roelf Meyer and retired lawyer De Wet du Plessis, calls for the stadium's carefully-tended pitch to be removed and replaced by thousands of tons of dirt, to create an AMA-style Supercross circuit, with a full-size “rock festival” stage at one end of the field. Du Plessis said at the official launch of the on first Cape Town Bike Festival on Wednesday evening: “I really didn't think it would take off the way it has - and this was not how I planned my retirement - but so far not one person has said 'No', so I've kept on going.” Meyer, the chairman of the festival, said: “I think it's a legacy event from the World Cup 2010. It's got everything - it's a leisure event, it's a sport event, it's a family event.” Laurine Platsky, deputy director-general in the office of the Premier of the Western Cape, said the province was keen to use the stadium for new and exciting ventures, as was Grant Pascoe, Mayco member for marketing and tourism. The dates are set (the festival will run from December 16-18) and plans are underway to bring major international acts, both musical and mechanical, to South Africa to headline the programme. It'll be a day-night game, with supercross racing in the afternoon, the finals of the Miss Biker SA pageant at sunset, and stunt shows, top DJ's and big-name rock bands (we heard the words “Zee Zee Top” whispered at the launch but that's unofficial) deep into the night. Legendary South African stunt rider and Supermoto champion Brian Capper will perform, as will top international freestyle motorcross team “Masters of Dirt”, whose Hollywood-style show includes Pyrotechnics, music, fire shows, drummers - and quads! There will be a lifestyle expo with everything from fashion apparel to tattoo artists to biker lifestyle merchandise, go-fast goodies and accessories for any bike you can think of - and a custom build-off where South Africa top bike builders will show just what they can do when there's a big prize at stake. And we mean big: the winner - and his bike - will be flown to the 2012 Sturgis Rally in South Dakota, to compete against the best in the world. Ticket sales for the Cape Town Bike Festival will start on Computicket in July and three-day package tickets are already available on the Cape Town Bike Festival website www.capetownbikefestival.com. Entries for Miss Biker SA are also open, so if you're between 18 and 30, drop-dead gorgeous, wild at heart and can ride a bike, find out more at the festival website. |
