Because then they would have to actually market the event and pretend that it was worth hosting

i remember being at the final of the irb junior world cup in jozi in 2002. if i remember correctly the finals had not been scheduled to be played at ellis park but then SA made the final and any other venue would have been too small. ellis park must have been at the very least half full and there was a good atmosphere.

if SA make the final - hopefully they might look at moving the final to a bigger venue. but the overlords at wprfu said newlands is the home of "all" rugby in the western cape so i don't think they'd allow the final to be played at ct stadium and risk the public experiencing the new stadium. we might see a final at newlands

Ajax confirm Manchester United negotiations
Posted: 2012-05-25 11:28

Ajax Cape Town vs Manchester United – that’s a real possibility with negotiations currently underway.

The 19-time English Premiership champions are set to play a once-off friendly with AmaZulu on July 18 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban and KickOff.com can also confirm that the Red Devils may clash with the Urban Warriors three days later at the Cape Town Stadium.

“It has been talked about, but nothing is confirmed yet,” Ajax CEO George Comitis says. “They [Manchester United] are busy with the City [of Cape Town] and the match has been earmarked for July 21,” he adds.

Meanwhile, there was talk too of a Man United vs Mamelodi Sundowns friendly but the club’s PRO Kabelo Mosito says, “I don’t know anything about that”.

So according to the front page of today's Cape Times, they're finally going ahead and pushing for commercial activity in and around the stadium with plans to include a nightclub (), restaurants, coffee shops and sports bars.

Cape Town mulls commercial stadium use
6 June 2012

Cape Town - The City of Cape Town wants to convert its stadium into a hub of commercial activity to make the R4.5bn building sustainable, it was reported on Wednesday.

The Cape Times reported that the stadium was costing the city about R44.6m a year with very few hiring activities taking place due to hiring costs.

The mayoral committee decided on Tuesday it would approach the province to ease restrictions that were put in place to appease Green Point residents during the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

The province had banned commercial and retail outlets, commercial parking, and hiring out of commercial office spaces to third parties to reduce high noise levels and traffic volumes.

If these rules are scrapped, it could see a nightclub, restaurants, coffee shops and sports bars built within the stadium and precinct.

Green Point Ratepayers and Residents Association chairperson Bobby Goebel told the newspaper it welcomed development within the stadium but would object to a building on the Green Point Common.

This is great news. Hopefully Green Point residents don't halt this development. It's a model other stadiums should look at. It's useless to only open them a few times a year for matches.

I think a lot of new baseball stadiums in the US do stuff like this. Some have water slides and stuff.

The short sighted geniuses have finally seen the light! The stadium was bound to become a big white elephant from the start.
Can it accomodate an Imax theatre, or an ice rink might be a good idea too?

I doubt an Imax would work, considering it failed at the V&A.

An ice rink would be amazing. It would fit in very well with the sporting theme of the Common, considering another ice hockey team could base themselves out of the rink if it meets the required international standards. It could help grow the sport in the city, which is receiving increasing support. But that begs the question of where they would be enough space to build an entire rink in existing facilities, considering the Residents Association is opposed to the construction of additional buildings on the Common.

A boy can dream

Cape Town - Owing to adverse pitch conditions, the South African Rugby Union (SARU) and the IRB have jointly made the decision to move the remainder of the IRB Junior World Championship 2012 matches scheduled for the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch.

With the surface at the Danie Craven Stadium having cut up significantly after two rounds of three matches in the flagship age grade competition and bad weather hitting the Cape Town area, the decision was agreed by all stakeholders following an inspection of the surface.

The iconic Newlands Stadium will now host both semi-finals and the fifth place semi-final on June 17, and the third-place playoff and IRB Junior World Championship 2012 final on June 22. Kick-off times and broadcast arrangements remain the same.

Cape Town Stadium will host the June 12 final round of pool matches (Ireland v Italy, South Africa v England and France v Australia) previously scheduled for the Danie Craven Stadium. Matches at the University of Western Cape Stadium in Cape Town remain as scheduled.
Full story

Danie Craven Stadium looked a mess from the start, glad they moved the matches. Plus this great stadium gets some more rugby.

Some sad, and surprising honest statements coming out if CT:

Quote:
CAPE Town has chosen Manchester United ahead of Africa because it's cheaper and more popular.

HOWZAT! Hosting Afcon matches would have cost R20m but Manchester United - the world's most popular football club - would cost less than R7m

That was the rationale given by the Mother City for agreeing to stage a match involving the English Premier League giants rather than any side at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations finals that will be hosted by South Africa.

Cape Town city councillor Grant Pascoe, a member of the mayoral committee, defended Cape Town's decision to reject that chance to host any of next year's Afcon matches while agreeing to host Man United.

Pascoe said staging the Afcon matches would have cost R20m but United would cost "less than R7m and still make money".

United will play AmaZulu at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on July 18 and take on Ajax Cape Town on July 21 at the Cape Town Stadium.

"We look at iconic brands, that is our strategy," said Pascoe. "Man U will probably travel with about 100 foreign media and they are going to have TV and broadcasting live even though this is a friendly. And that helps us and puts us on the map.

"And we probably got a bargain," he said. "If Durban are spending R7m, we will spend less and still make some revenue."

He hit back at Safa and the Afcon Local Organising Committee for poor communicationt.

"The questions we asked were never answered. But Manchester United chose us."

Gate takings will also add to the revenue Pascoe referred to, with tickets priced at R150 to R350.

"On the Cape Flats and across town, Man United is the most supported European team. So it is going to be very easy to fill up the stadium," he said.

Totally makes sense. This is something I know that tons of people I personally know will be flocking to, as opposed to the AFCON (which I would have supported anyway, but these same people likely wouldn't have).

I posted in the MyBB thread that this makes sense in that richer folks (read mostly white people) will go to this match, as opposed to the AFCON. This is what will allow them to charge the higher prices, and likely make more out of the deal. Who gets the ticket money though? I think I read that in Durban Man U set ticket prices and want part of the money.
