Metropol Parasol in The New York Times

Quote:
Metrosol Parasol, Huge Wooden Structure, Debuts in Seville

For centuries, Seville, Spain, has been known for its striking architecture — particularly its Moorish Alcázar and huge Gothic cathedral. The Metropol Parasol, a large, multipurpose structure that made its debut late last month in the city, looks both backward and forward in its unusual design.

The project was initiated in 2004 after Roman ruins were discovered in a parking lot. An ensuing competition for a surrounding structure was won by Jüergen Mayer H., a busy architect based in Berlin. Seven years and about 110 million euros (about $162 million) later, Seville has what Mr. Mayer H. called “an icon project for the city — so they can compete with Bilbao, etc.”

David Franck
The structure, over 450 feet long and seven stories high, incorporates those ruins into a museum on its lowest level. The upper levels house an indoor food market, plazas with panoramic views, and a restaurant. But most notable is the undulating, honeycombed roof of the structure, made from polyurethane-covered wood and held together by a new type of glue. (The building is the world’s largest glued structure, according to Mr. Mayer H.)

The unusual shape of the building is a direct reference to the cathedral, Mr. Mayer H. said. “Seville was the innovator of Europe,” he said. “We wanted to reference that.” But, he added, he also wanted to both bring the look up to date and create a structure that was “democratic, open and urban.”

I visited the Metropol Parasol in early April, it is a truly amazing structure! I only wish that I had known that there is a walkway on top of it
