CSR fleet enters service on San Martín route
24 Apr 2014

ARGENTINA: President Cristina Fernández joined Minister of the Interior & Transport Florencio Randazzo at Sáenz Peña station on April 23 to mark the entry into service of the new fleet supplied by CSR of China for the San Martín commuter route in Buenos Aires.

Fernández said that the new fleet and upgraded infrastructure on the San Martín route between Retiro and Pilar marked the start of a US$1⋅63bn railway investment programme that would also include the Mitre, Sarmiento and Roca commuter networks, as well as the main lines from Buenos Aires to Rosario and Mar del Plata.

CSR has supplied a total of 24 diesel locomotives and 160 coaches for the San Martín route, where platforms are being raised to match the floor height of the new cars

Actual situation with train improvements in Argentina as of today is this:

- Buenos Aires - Rosario: quite intensive track renewal and expected competitive passenger service running by the end of 2014 with the new CSR trains

- Buenos Aires - Mar del Plata: quite intensive track renewal and expected competitive passenger service running by the end of 2014 with the new CSR trains.

- Buenos Aires - Bahia Blanca -Viedma - Bariloche: might take years before the line is reopened, if ever: the test the train on the photos (the ones with a train running close to kids and mountains with snow) run came up with these results: damaged bridges, trains too heavy for several viaducts, tracks in very bad shape. Renovation costs are extremely high. Viedma-Bariloche will continue running for tourists only, likely just once per week.

- New rolling stock on 2 Buenos Aires commuter lines: San Martin and Mitre (the later by July aprox).

- Excess new chinese long distance rolling stock (since very few will be actually used due to track renewals requirements that the goverment wasn't counting on) is being used on express services on Buenos Aires commuter lines such as Buenos Aires - La Plata and certain somewhat erratic and slow services on from Buenos Aires city to certain towns in the Buenos Aires province up to 300 kms away.

The goverment talks about a "railway revolution" going on, but actually it's just this. Anyway given the lack of investment for decades on railways this is actually positive. I was surprised they finally decided to change some tracks on 2 long distance services!
