hkskyline's 2009 HONG KONG Photo Collection #2

Parts 1-5 : http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=912018

Part 6
Time to take a ride along the escalator from the financial district to the posh bars and residences along the hillsides.

I was a bit surprised to see this mini-garden in the previously empty lot. Good thing they're starting to add more greenery to the cityscapes.

There seems to be a stronger citizen movement to stop these older structures from being demolished and replaced by giant skyscrapers. With some renovations, they can look quite good and habitable.

A lot of people struggling for some views.

There are a lot more restaurants and bars in this part of town from my last visit a few years ago. Can't say it's a change to upscale, but at least it's more vibrant. The residences remain upstairs, so they may be disturbed at night.

The stigma of the red white blue label remains. It used to be despised upon as a low-class symbol. Now it appears to be an artistic expression.

This building made it to the news before. The owner bought the whole block and renovated it. Looks quite nice. Again, it shows not that much needs to be done to make an old building habitable again. No need to always smash and rebuild.

Unfortunately, the neighbours don't agree.

Imagine what a renovation would do to these.

Hong Kong's old streetscapes looked quite good, with reasonable density, architectural merit, and greenery!

Part 7

Continuing my walk in Midlevels, there still are a lot of old buildings, but in a variety of different states.

This the traditional way to dry goods - right on the street.

The Hollywood Road Police R&F Married Quarters now sits vacant. Hope it doesn't turn into yet another upper class skyscraper development.

Approaching development ...

A revitalised staircase.

Notice the left side of this building has been renovated.

Part 11
1. Sunset and haze come well together strangely.

6. These Enviros are now everywhere in Hong Kong, but not too many of them are in the airport bus livery.

7. Cathay plans to phase out its passenger 747 planes, so I try to find them whenever I'm at the airport. Soon they'll be history!

9. Nostalgia is the latest craze. The Central Police Headquarters is a greatvenue to savour the past.

13. Recharging ...

14. The new and cheaper open-top double decker bus will probably destroy the Big Bus tours.

17. Dried fish, anyone?

22. Sesame in a dessert ... I was hoping it'd be a warm dish on a cold day.

Part 12 - Pot Pourri

Exploring the side streets in North Point, there are still some older lowrises. But slowly, they're going away, replaced by more giants.
