woow. 1800. Too costly. I can buy 50 lts of dielsel for my car, go to Bangalore, drive around, and comeback for that money. If I have a friend, then I can do it 2 times instead of an one way trip. The rate has to come down.

TShyam - Driver is free here for that charge..

Only proves that for this kind of volume, we must think of a Bullet Train and cut the travel time to an hour or two.

Plan to decongest Koyambedu

Quote:
A plan to decongest the Koyambedu area by shifting a section of mofussil buses there to terminus on the outskirts of the city is in the offing. However, the existing facilities in Koyambedu would be put to optimum use.

According to sources in the Housing and Urban Development Department, the plan is being considered following suggestions from commuters. The inter city terminals for mofussil buses that pass through Grand Southern Trunk Road towards the southern part of the State are likely to be located near Tambaram.

Two options - Sriperumbudur and Poonamallee - are being considered for locating the terminus for buses that pass through National Highway 4 towards the western parts of the State.

According to CMDA officials, the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus is currently unable to handle the large number of mofussil buses from various parts of the State. The efforts towards creating adequate idle parking lots for mofussil buses are yet to be successful. As various government departments with land in the area not likely to part with their land for expansion of the terminus, the option of shifting a section of the buses to the outskirts has been under consideration.

A discussion on this is likely to be initiated at a meeting of CMDA shortly. With the Metrorail work likely to increase traffic congestion in and around Koyambedu, efforts are already under way to tackle congestion. More traffic changes are also likely when the construction of the Metrorail stations begin.

Originally, the initiative was part of the strategy proposed by the Second Master Plan for the Chennai Metropolitan Area for optimising the existing road transport infrastructure, according to which the policy of the government was towards shifting the inter-regional terminals from the city core towards the city fringe.

pretty cool. i am sure would be a huge hit esp. among corporates - i guess the only ones who still use flights between chennai & bangalore. btw, it is hard to find first class train tickets & tatkal 2 tier that cost in excess of rs. 1000. i would have used this 5 years ago when i used to fly this sector almost every fortnight.

Work on four-laning a stretch of Velachery Main Road begins

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/C...ow/7038530.cms

After months of uncertainty, work on converting the 2.5-km Pallikaranai-Medavakkam stretch of Velachery Main Road a four-lane road began on Friday.

In the first part, a 650-metre stretch from Medavakkam Junction will be covered. "Initially, we wanted the monsoon to settle down before beginning work. But the monsoon has begun to fade and we were running behind schedule so we began work," officials of the state highways department, which is executing the Rs 10-crore project, told The Times Of India.

Every week, according to police sources, at least four accidents occur between Pallikarnai and Medavakkam, making it one of the deadliest stretches on the city outskirts.

For over five years, the work had been delayed due to opposition from the owners of shops and buildings between Pallikarnai and Medavakkam. Some moved the Madras high court against eviction for the project. However, most of these shops are on the Pallikaranai side and a lot of government land is available in Medavakkam. "So we decided to begin work from here," the officials said.

On July 2, when a team of officials came to clear the encroachments, over 50 traders led by Tamil Nadu Traders Association president Vellaiyan objected and the work had to be stopped. Since then, the project remained in cold storage. "Traffic congestion is acute on this stretch," said a policeman at the check-post at Medavakkam Junction.

The Pallikaranai-Medavakkam stretch, now less than 60 feet wide, will be restored to its original width and another 75 feet of land will be acquired on both sides to convert it into a four-lane with a common drainage system and a median. The 21-km-long Velachery Main Road connects the city with East Tambaram via Saidapet.

Everyday, hundreds of residents in areas like Mudichur, Tambaram, Selaiyur, Perungalathur, Perumbakkam and Ottiyambakkam use this stretch to go to the city. "Many in Velachery, Pallikaranai, Madipakkam, Kovilambakkam, Narayanapuram and Nanmangalam also use this stretch to reach St Thomas Mount railway station," said K Shanmugam of Nanmangalam.

Google Maps Get Pune & Chennai Transit Info

Google has added Pune city bus service (PMPML) public transport information to Google Maps, allowing commuters to access transit information on the maps. This is the fifth Indian city they’ve added transit information for, following the Chennai MRTS, Delhi Metro Rail, Kolkata Metro, and Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (bus) information. “Commuters in Pune can now find out bus schedules and routes for 320 of PMPML buses via Google Maps on desktop and mobile”, Kiran Bapna, New Business Development & Manik Gupta, Product Manager, Google Maps & Local Search, Google India, write in a blog post.

Google is, however, yet to add bus information for Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai, and what is really missing, is traffic information. Perhaps, with Google in the process of partnering with local bus transportation companies, they can also look to embed GPS devices which will help track exact bus locations, estimate transit time better (currently Google Maps travel time estimates are not very accurate). In the meantime, SatNav and MapMyIndia are trying to get traffic information in completely different ways:

Road re-laying work to be expedited

NEW LOOK LIKELY: Re-laying work on New Avadi Road may be taken up by the Chennai Corporation shortly. Photo: S. Thanthoni

The Corporation will expedite re-laying work of 1,320 roads, which will cost Rs.117 crore, and will complete it in 60 days, according to Mayor M. Subramanian.

Inspecting the work on re-laying of the roads under the special roads programme here on Tuesday, Mayor M. Subramanian said that various efforts have been made by the civic body for accelerating the pace of the work.

The Chennai Police have agreed to issue special passes for heavy vehicles carrying the bitumen mix from the plant on the outskirts to enter the city limits without delay. This would help speed up the work and also help maintain optimum temperature for the bitumen mix for better roads, he said. The work entrusted to contractors under the special roads programme within the Corporation limits has also commenced this week and re-laying of roads covered under the programme is under way at a cost of Rs.60 crore. The work under the special roads programme has been bundled in three packages of Rs.20 crore each.

Black-topping

New Avadi Road, one of the many arterial roads dug up for improvement works of water supply network, will soon be black-topped as Metrowater may complete pipeline laying in a fortnight, said Mr. Subramanian.

According to sources, a 2-km stretch of the road has already been handed over to the Corporation for re-laying. Work is on progress in the remaining stretch.

The road has become heavily congested as a portion of it is being used for two-way traffic for a year now.

Pipeline laying work on the road was part of the improvement work taken up in the Kilpauk water distribution zone. The incessant rains last year were cited as the reason for the delay in the work.

The Mayor said the Chennai Metrowater had sought permission for road cuts for a stretch of nearly 140 km for strengthening water supply network.

Metrowater is carrying out improvement work in four water distribution stations, southern headworks (Valluvar Kottam), Anna Poonga (Mint), Kilpauk and K.K.Nagar, to facilitate equal distribution of water supply.

The water agency has not sought permission from the Corporation for new road cuts now. Only a few stretches such as Anna Nagar Fifth avenue, R.K Mutt road and Anna Main Road have been dug up for maintenance and improvement of sewer network.

Repair work on Jawaharlal Nehru Salai within three days

CHOKED: The congested road under the Ekkadthangal bridge will soon be widened by the Highways Department. Photo: R.Shivaji Rao

Work to repair the battered stretches of Jawaharlal Nehru Salai will begin in two or three days.

Inspecting the stretch near Ekkaduthangal bridge on Monday, Highways Minister Vellakoil M.P. Saminathan instructed the officials to accelerate the pace of the project worth Rs.80 lakh, as the busy road has become heavily congested following the launch of metro rail project.

The stretch from Koyambedu to Guindy, which was battered, will be improved by the Highways Department. The Minister, accompanied by Mayor M. Subramanian, also reviewed the road under the bridge, which gets choked with traffic during rush hour.

It was decided to widen the road under the bridge and also construct hand rails. Moreover, the encroachments along the stretch were also decided to be removed for road widening.

Following the launch of metro rail project in the stretch between Ambal Nagar and Ashok Nagar recently, the number of motorists using the road under the bridge has increased. Pedestrians have a hard time, as every inch of road space is occupied by vehicles.

Motorists say it now takes nearly half an hour to cross the nearly three-km stretch between Guindy industrial estate and Ashok Pillar.

R.Bhuvana, a resident of Balaji Nagar, said intersections near Kalaimagal Nagar and Ekkaduthangal have been closed owing to the metro rail project work.

Motorists bound to Guindy take the road under the bridge and this has led to the congestion.
