OTTO WULFF - Jugendstil in Buenos Aires

The Otto Wulff is the most glorious piece of the Modernism in Buenos Aires. Though it combines several types of Modernism, it mostly uses the german Jugendstil. Placed on the intersection of the Perú and Belgrano streets, the Otto Wulff Building shows two psychedelic domes, both crowned by a Sun and a Crown in commemoration to the Emperor Francisco José and the Empress Sissí of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, who ceased to exist while it was currently on construction. The Otto Wulff is one of the richest building of Buenos Aires when it comes to details: the facades show several animals of the wildlife of Argentina and it is “sustained” by the Atlas figures.

Glasgow | Lion Chambers | James Salmon & John Gaff Gillespie

Lion Chambers was built 1904-07 to the designs of James Salmon (see the ‘Hatrack’) and John Gaff Gillespie using the Hennebique concrete construction method allowing walls that are only 100mm thick. The building was commissioned by lawyer and art lover William G. Black, it contained a printing press in the basement, his law chambers above and artist studios in the top floors. A lot to cram into a site area that measures 11x14m.

Sadly in a poor condition today, a century of Scottish winters have taken their toll on the relatively delicate structure. Conservation efforts have been stymied by difficulties with multiple ownership and securing the concrete fabric of the building. The ownership issues have been resolved and the building is available to any developer with a serious proposal for restoration and reuse. Due to the fabric condition issue the building was encased in wire mesh in 2001 so I have included some old pics for clarity

Villa looks great but it's the Art Deco architecture. BTW, the villa was built in 1924 in the Art Deco era.
