Ahmedabad has become a role model city for how to implement an affordable, accessible, and urban friendly mass transit system.

GIFT city gifts chill ride

Source

To provide an easy connectivity to GIFT premises, Gujarat International Finance Tech-City Ltd (GIFTCL) has launched air-conditioned bus service from Ahmedabad.Employees on GIFT campus, business associates or anyone who wants to see the tech city, can avail of the transport facility that started about a fortnight ago.

The authority has set up two pickup points near Visat Petrol Pump in Chandkheda and Raksha University circle that are easily accessible for BRTS and AMTS travellers.

GIFT Managing Director R K Jha said,We have started AC bus service about two weeks ago with a token fare which is less than BRTS ticket for the same distance. We are planning to introduce the services from other places between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar soon. GIFTCL plans to take the services to places which do not provide connectivity to GIFT campus.

10 MORE BUSES BY YEAR END

Currently, there are two buses for visitors and employees of companies which have bought space on GIFT premises. The authorities want to add 10 more buses to the existing fleet by the year end.

We wanted to promote public transport so we thought of offering this service to employees working here and people who will join here in future, said Jha.

We have unveiled our first tall building of 29 floors. The second tall building on the GIFT campus is also ready. Thus,we expect 8,000 to 10,000 people on the campus by the endofMarch2014,said Jha. Theemployees can also expect BRTS services for the campus as it is under consideration, said Jha. But until that happens,we have to make people use public transport, he added.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT USE ONLY 12%

Ahmedabad Urban Development Authoritys Senior Town Planner Neela Munshi said: People must use public transport to avoid traffic congestion. This also saves fuel.Normally, one or two people travel in a car which is waste of space. More people can travel in a bus. It brings down congestion and ensures smooth traffic on roads.

IT WILL EASE TRAFFIC

Munshi, who has played a key role in formulating the citys new development plan for the next 10 years, said that the use of public transport in the city is about 12 per cent currently.Ideally,itshouldbemorethan50per cent. But if we achieve even 30 per cent,it is good, said Munshi.

Pritesh Patel, Director of Monarch Innovation Pvt Ltd,who has acquired office on GIFT campus, said: GIFTCLs initiative is praiseworthy. Our employees are upbeat about it.The facility will help us lap good talent from various areas.

Overall, testing was going on at the following places (green pointers):

Apart from that, I could see some work going on in the Depot. Seemed to be quite a large workforce and many engineers. The 3 white triangles denote the places where some construction work was going on...

It would be safe to assume that the testing locations lie more or less in the area where the Indroda Station will come up...

Short translation:
  • Kalupur Railway Station to have 3 dedicated lanes.
  • The closest lane to the terminus building will allow BRT buses and VIP Vehicles (i.e. those who drop passengers and leave immediately). It will be 6.5 m wide.
  • The middle lane will be reserved for Rickshaws. It will be 4.5 m wide.
  • The last lane will allow Cars and 2-wheelers who want to park for an extended period of time. It will be 6.0 m wide.
  • Aside from that new parking spaces will be developed and categorized.
  • A garden will be developed.
  • Escalators to gain direct access to the platform skywalks.
  • The Antique Engine will be shifted to a place near the station.

KEEP TABS ON YOUR AUTO FARE, ROUTES

G-Auto has begun installing 3G tablets in its rickshaws to inspire confidence among passengers against getting overcharged;tabs will be linked to police helpline, too

Source

Quote:
Most woes of Amdavadis who travel by autorickshaw are likely to be addressed soon.G-Auto,the social umbrella brand of about 10,000 autorickshaws in Ahmedabad,Gandhinagar and Vadodara,is introducing a hi-tech GPS-based 3G tablet which will take care of problems like overcharging by drivers and their taking longer routes to inflate fare, besides introducing a slew of other facilities to help passengers.

The tab will be installed in 100 autorickshaws by August 7,when there will be a roadshow of such autos from C G Road to S G Highway. The facility will be gradually extended to other autos, too, according to Nirmal Kumar, founder and managing trustee of Nirmal Foundation which runs G-Auto.

The new system means there will be an electronic tab on the drivers side. The tab will work on GPRS.
