Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro Project Finalized, To Start From Old City

Draft plan for Metro project cleared, 60% of route to be laid underground

Source

July 21st (Gandhinagar): The nine year delay in executing the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro rail project will now cost the state exchequer over four times the original cost estimate. The state government has finalized the Draft Project Report (DPR) of the project and arrived at a final cost of Rs 22,000 crore, which may further escalate as work on the project proceeds.

The original estimated cost of the project in 2004-05 was only Rs 5000 crore.
Highly placed sources in the state government said, The ministers committee and a group of secretaries led by the chief secretary have cleared the final DPR of the metro rail. The cost has been estimated to be Rs 22,000 crore.

The ministers committee rejected the earlier plan suggested by the Metro Link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (MEGA) Company Limited. The construction, which was earlier to start between Infocity-Gandhinager and AEC junction in Sabarmati, will now start in the old city area first.

This will pose a big technical challenge to the company. The underground rail network will span two old city routes: APMC (Vasna)-Paldi-Jamalpur-Kalupur to Civil Hospital, and Memco (Naroda) to AEC (Sabarmati). These routes have the highest priority now. Considering the dense population of these localities, digging the underground tunnel will be a highly challenging task. Almost 60% of the rail length will be underground now, said sources.

MEGA has already started final soil testing, and the actual construction work is expected to start after monsoon, some time around Diwali. Sources further said, The state government has also decided upon the funding of the project. 60% of the total cost will be funded from the state budget, with the remaining 40% funded by debt financing from domestic and international agencies. 20% of the states contribution will be sourced from the Viability Gap Fund (VGF) from the Centre and the equity contribution from the states Public Sector Undertaking (PSU).

Stations

The rail corridor will have a total of 53 stations, with 42 elevated stations and 11 underground. A single level platform independent of the viaduct has been envisaged for the proposed metro station. This will further help in reduction of the height of the viaduct. Two types of station locations are planned, locations on the road median and others on road junctions. The total length of the stations will be 100m, which will accommodate four car trains.

Escalators will be provided to ascend to the platform, which can be reversed in emergencies. The staircase widths also take account of emergency evacuation measures. In the case of an emergency, the platforms can be evacuated in 4 minutes, while the whole station can be evacuated in 8 minutes. Lifts are also provided for persons with disabilities. Traffic integration areas have been provided at most of the stations along with parking space.

Train operation plan

An effective metro system provides high frequency services both during peak and offpeak hours. For this purpose,in the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro will have short trains (with 2 coaches) running at 5 minute frequency during peak periods and 15 minute frequency during off-peak periods. The high frequency two-coach train service will be suitably increased to four coaches as demand increases. Metro services will be available for 19 hours of the day (5 am to midnight). Trains will travel at the scheduled speed of 45 kmph, and will stop at stations for 30 seconds. Each two-coach train will have a capacity of 400 passengers, and four-coach trains will carry twice that number.

Depot

Three full-fledged depo-cum-workshops have been planned at Indroda, Motera and Isanpur.

Automatic fare collection

A computer-based automatic fare collection system has been proposed for the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro. This will make selling tickets simple and require less manpower. The system will be easy to operate and maintain, easy on accounting facilities, capable of issuing single/multiple journey tickets and amenable to quick fare changes. The system will prove to be cheaper than a semiautomatic system in the long run due to reduced maintenance in comparison to paper ticket machines, the lesser cost of recyclable tickets (smart card or tokens) and prevention of revenue leakage.

AHMEDABAD & GANDHINAGAR | Metro

MetroLink Express Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar (MEGA) is the long awaited metro-rail service for both the Political and Financial Capitals of Gujarat.

After various feasibility reports gave the project a thumbs up, there was a long quiet spell, however, there are now encouraging signs for this much needed undertaking, underlined by the formation of an SPV in May of 2009 to manage the project in the same way that DMRC did in Delhi.

Phase I of the project, as recommended by DMRC will be completely elevated

N-S = 32.65km, 31 stations
E-W = 10.90km, 11 stations

Quote:
Contrary to popular perception of an underground tube' system for Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro, the Delhi Metro Rail
Corporation (DMRC) had proposed an elevated corridor in 2005 as it will occupy less space and not prove to be a traffic hurdle.

The north-south corridor connecting Ashram Road till Gandhinagar is wholly elevated and close to 26 per cent of the corridor will have curves up to radius as sharp as 130 metres. The 32.65-km corridor will start at the junction of Ashram Road on National Highway 8A near APMC Vasna. The route will move along the central verge of Ashram Road covering Vasna, Paldi, VS Hospital, Town Hall and reach Income-Tax junction.

At this stage, the corridor will cross the east-west corridor of the metro rail. The intermediary stations will include Usmanpura, Vadaj, Subhash Circle and then pass in front of Gandhi Ashram. It is here that the alignment crosses Chimanbhai Bridge and the railway lines to reach Sabarmati Bridge, Motera Stadium till Radhasoami Satsang Vyas near Koba Circle. The line will then turn a little left and towards state highway 71 to Gandhinagar. Before the train reaches Indroda Circle, a connection is provided from Dhaula Kuva station near Infocity and GIFT city.

The east-west corridor will start from Kalupur station and then take a periphery route skirting the walled city taking the Kasturba Gandhi road passing through Delhi Darwaza, Prem Darwaza and Shahpur Darwaza. The route will then turn south towards I-T Circle. DMRC has suggested that few buildings will have to relocated here in order to create an intersection for the north-south metro corridor. From here, the route will turn west towards Commerce Crossing, further towards Manav Mandir, Drive-In Road via 132-feet Ring Road before terminating at Thaltej Crossing. The total route length of the east-west corridor is 10.90 km.

The report further states that a total of the 11 stations will be located on the east-west corridor while 31 stations located on the north-south corridor.

Gujarat Industrial Development Board (GIDB) are yet to receive a final word on the route extensions up to Dholera SIR, which also includes an intersection with the Delhi-Mumbai Infrastructure Corridor (DMIC). A possible route towards this region is a route extension Changodar Crossroads in the second phase of the metro rail.

Gives good info about the various locations of all the proposed depots and casting yards. Turns out Motera is the mother depot as most of the phase 1 construction is going to happen there.

Have compiled all the locations w.r.t. the given information. The area of Motera Depot (shaded portion) has been assumed keeping in mind that it is 20 hectares in size and it is limited on one side by the Mother Dairy. So have assumed its dimensions as 800m x 250m...

All other assumptions have been made by their given distance and directions from the Motera Depot.

One of the warehouses is located near Mother Dairy (or above the Motera Depot) and the other is located near Prantiya Village near IIT Gandhinagar along NH-8.

Gujarat Metro: 26 global majors make track for design consultancy

Quote:
Gandhinagar, Aug 29 :

Global majors are in the race for providing design consultancy services for Ahmedabad leg of Rs 19,000 crore Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro project.

The Metro-link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (MEGA) has received huge response from Indian companies and those from the USA, Germany, French, South Korea, Netherlands and Spain.

Twentysix companies\consortia have submitted expressions of interest (EOIs) in response to an invitation by MEGA in July. Indian majors like Larsen & Toubro and Tata Consulting Engineers, too, have submitted EOIs, an official said on Thursday.

MEGA is the special purpose vehicle (SPV) floated by the Gujarat government to conceive, design and execute the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro. The EOIs were invited for the preparation of design and other operational and functional information related to construction of elevated (over ground) metro stations.

This Metro has been conceived as the most technically advanced metro project undertaken so far in India. The project is being executed on an EPC basis with MEGA itself functioning as the EPC contractor and going forward it will be the operations and maintenance contractor too.

Based on CBTC technology it will pioneer driverless trains in India as well as offer Wi-Fi connectivity on the move. The frequency between two trains will be 90 seconds, the lowest in the world. Its core infrastructure work will begin in October 2013.

It is working fine right now with optimum capacity. And for articulated buses we need proper infra, wide roads and good traffic discipline.

We have given approval in principle to conduct a survey to check feasibility of using battery-operated buses in the city. After the survey,we will check the budget and durability of batteries along with load bearing capacity, said Municipal Commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra. The project will be done in association with Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) which is a nodal authority in this.A proposal was made by TERIandwehaveagreedtotry themachinebeforetakingafinal decision, he added.
