If you look at the pictures above it seems a theme in 60's Birmingham to put a small tower on a pedestal. It doesn't look good.
Its totally gutted, if refurbished it could look real nice.

Am I dreaming this, or was it announced that a hotel operator was on about refurbishing it anyway?

There was an application for it to be renovated into a hotel but, IIRC, it was withdrawn and plans changed. Feltip probably has a better idea - his memory seems to be archival...

Watch this space - I believe there will be some movement in the next few months.

I remember playing this game back in primary school.

I'm sure the demolition contractors will welcome all your great ideas about how to remove a poorly built, flat pack tower block the stands over one of the country's busiest rail stations, several streets and a shopping centre.

If you ask me they're making good progress.

Preparatory work for the steel facade will follow the closure of bus stops on Stephenson Street on Sunday 24th July to allow for half road closure from 25th July. The 16,000 metre façade will be installed from early 2012 onwards with the first section being the north face of the station on Stephenson Street
http://birminghamcentral.blogspot.co...-as-tower.html

[quote]
The work will take place in three phases:

•Removing sections of the existing concrete panels on the station building to survey and establish fixing points for the facade
•Supporting structural steel work is then attached to the building
•Finally, the stainless steel cladding will be attached to the supporting steelwork.

New Street is very much a series of different projects. Overall, I think it's around schedule, but the situation with this bridge off Hill Street last Christmas has probably knocked things back, I imagine. They really need to get that sorted this year - weather permitting, obviously.

Think it's scheduled for this Christmas, weather permitting again.

There isn't the schedule blockade at Easter to do it hence why they didn't do it at easter this year.
