I dare say the project photographer has a slightly better idea of what's going on than you do. Maybe it'd be an idea to drop words like "stupid".

Would be interesting to know if they do publicly admit any delay as part of the funding arrangement, and particularly pertinent in the current economic climate, was that Birmingham City Council would pay for any going over budget.

Yea that's one hell of a turn around as the new part of the concourse looks well set to be open on time it is probably just the bridge part that is behind schedule as they couldn't put it in at Christmas.

I was told that they were about 3 weeks ahead of schedule, and are waiting for orders to come through? One of which is 2 weeks late and will pull the workers back to being slightly behind schedule with fitting ETC

Also posted in the Library of Birmingham thread. Kevin McCloud hates the old New Street Station. Thinks it was a mistake to get rid of the previous Victorian one.

ITV Central Tonight - Kevin McCloud at the top of the LoB. Views on our city architecture

Kevin's designed on brum

Kevin's Designs on Brum

"One of the most inhumane places I have ever been...A ghastly hellhole." The view of Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud about Birmingham's New Street station. Sounds bad. But he's actually quite a fan of a lot of Birmingham's post-war architecture. And he's been out and about with our correspondent Keith Wilkinson to give his verdict on some of the new creations

There wasn't much left of the "previous Victorian one" to retain. It was destroyed in WW2. The whole of the LNWR side of the station was open to the elements with only primitive canopies on the platforms. The demolition of Snow Hill was indeed a tragedy, but New Street was not fit for purpose after the war. In fact it was even more of a "hell-hole" than the present station.

I think we have our first light well in place? Or at least the start of it. There is a rather large hole above platform 12 I think it is (one of the ends) right above the centre area of the platform, It is currently covered by plastic wrapping etc, but there is a lot of work going on at this platform currently.

There aren't any light wells on Platform 12 in the final design, I am told. The holes being formed at the moment are for a new lift and an escalator up to the new concourse.

Not true.

It was still there after the war, and functioning if rather battered.

It wasn't a hell-hole from the pictures I've seen.

My grandad's mate worked in a warehouse beside New Street Station during the war. There was him and one other fella working in there. The warehouse contained loads of tables and above them suspended from the ceiling were Birmingham postcodes. Basically the body parts from the bomb site searches were delivered to them and it was their job to try and piece together what they could. The two of them just had an apron each, and spent the war sorting through body parts.

My grandad said there was one table left clear, right in the middle of the room. This was where they ate their sandwiches!

Quote from Birmingham - Fifty Years On (1952), by Paul S. Cadbury: "The great arch covered an immense area and gave reasonable comfort to passengers and staff. A German bomb made this unsafe and it was taken down in 1945. The present station is wasteful of space and uncomfortable for passengers and staff."

Quote from Britain's New Railway (1966) by O. S. Nock: "The old station, together with the hotel had for many years been a landmark in the centre of Birmingham. But following damage by bombing during the second world war and partial removal of the overall roof since the end of the war the station has been little more than a rather dismal makeshift."

The present station was hailed as a vast improvement on its predecessor when it was opened in the mid-60s. After the war there remained very little of its original Victorian grandeur. Even then there were design flaws in the station because it had to serve as a pedestrian thoroughfare as well as a railway station.

Exactly, it wasn't destroyed in the war. Just left very battered.
