I'm sure it was posted here a month or two back that they're actually slightly ahead of schedule?

Also stops those poor people from trying to end their lives by jumping off (almost one a day on the rail network as a whole)

They have been the BR/Railtrack/Network Rail Standard for decades.

The Finwood Road bridge over the M40 between J15 & J16 has metal parapets apart from the section over the railway lines which is solid concrete. Looks very odd but the rail engineering rules insist on it. And that was built in 1989/90!

I've witnessed it three times, twice at New Street.

I was on a Virgin train to Bristol and hit someone at 80mph, the two times at New Street people threw themselves in to the path of an incoming train from the platform, one died and the other wasn't hurt.

I was told by a police family liaison officer (had the white ribbon on his cap) it happens several times a year at New Street.

Gotta feel for the train driver, what he may have seen must give him/her nightmares.

Birmingham New Street station's new entrance gets under way

29 May 2012

Passengers using New Street station will soon be able to get a glimpse of the future shape of their station as our construction of a brand new entrance progresses rapidly over the coming weeks.

Situated on the corner of Stephenson Street and Navigation Street, the new entrance will improve links between the city’s business district and New Street by allowing passengers access to the first half of the new station direct from Stephenson Street.

We expect the new entrance and the first half of the new station concourse to open in April 2013 when we'll switch work to redeveloping the existing station.

The station remains open

The station will remain open throughout the redevelopment which will be complete in 2015. Passengers will notice the first changes to their journey when they start using the first half of the new station concourse when it opens in April 2013.

Chris Montgomery, our project director ail said: “The area on the north west side of the station will be the first area to see dramatic changes as part of our plans to transform New Street and the Pallasades. Work is underway to install the first sections of the stainless steel faįade above Stephenson Street and over the coming months passengers will be able to see one of the most important entrances into the new station start to take shape.

The redevelopment

The redevelopment of Birmingham New Street station and the Pallasades centre is backed by Birmingham City Council, Network Rail, Department for Transport, Centro and Advantage West Midlands.

The project will deliver:
  • Space to accommodate passenger growth: the new concourse will be three and a half times bigger than at present and will be enclosed by a giant atrium which will flood the station concourse and Pallsades with natural light
  • Better access for all: over 30 new escalators and 15 new public lifts will make it much easier to travel between the platforms and the concourse above
  • Cutting edge design: a stunning new station faįade will create a new landmark building in the heart of Birmingham
  • A revitalised city centre: the new redeveloped Pallasades centre anchored by the new John Lewis department store will offer new retail brands alongside quality places to eat and drink, cementing Birmingham’s reputation as one of the UK’s top retail destinations
  • Regeneration and economic growth: new pedestrian links will open up the city centre, stimulating regeneration and creating new jobs. We’re also working to open up job opportunities to the local workforce during construction

Other work on site

In addition to the work to construct the new station entrance, other activity on site at the moment includes:
  • South side/John Lewis: we've erected a second tower crane on the south side of the station and construction of the new John Lewis department store gets underway in June 2012
  • New concourse: work continues to construct the first half of the new station concourse which will open to passengers in April 2013 when the existing station closes for redevelopment
  • East/Bullring side: we're continuing work to construct the Moor St link pedestrian walkway due to open in April 2013 - the walkway will improve the connection between Stephenson Street, New Street and Moor St stations
  • East side: work is underway to create the new public square on the east side of the station
  • Pallasades: the Pallasades car park has closed for demolition and rebuilding, and large areas of the centre are now behind hoardings as work continues to create the space for the new atrium
  • Lamp block: work to complete the new train crew accommodation above platform 1 on the west side of the station is almost complete

I didn't realise they were actually demolishing the multi-storey car park and then rebuilding it - I thought they were just covering it up... I wish they just demolished it and left it at that.

The delays to phase one must have been down to the bridge problems during the really cold weather over last winter, So I'd make a guess and say they could be a month or two out on the final date but we shall see.

According to http://www.networkrail.co.uk/aspx/6239.aspx - the project is still due for completion summer 2015, with no official completion month. The revised timeline is:

1 Sept 2009: Preparatory work commences on site
2 April 2010: Construction begins, the first platform is refurbished and the new concourse is created in the old NCP car park
3 Summer 2011: Work to clad the station in its reflective steel facade begins
4 April 2013: First half of the concourse opens. The new station concourse opens for passengers and work switches to transform the existing station
5 Summer 2015: The project completes and the station fully opens

With JL now it would look really odd in my opinion to not have the car park!

I think the car park being clad in the reflective steel makes a huge impact, far better than if it was removed in my opinion. Also will help JL with their homeware section as the plans show an additional level which will link to the store via lift/stairwell.

The car park has always been the bit that I've been uneasy about with the design, simply because it's a huge swathe of stainless steel. I think John Lewis still looks odd as it is anyway, and I'm not keen on a homeware section being so central.

See in my opinion I think it would look odd without JL and the car park, the corners have the "eye" screens and Stephenson St has Ladywood House. The front facing the Bullring seems awkward to me with it being just station height seems as though something is missing

I think the car park side adds to the design and bulks it up good
