Since Venice is already a living museum/amusement park, it'd be nice if their lagoon was classified as a sort of special zone requiring "tourist visas" to visit the islands- charging $$$ per visa - and limiting the # of visas per year. This will raise billions of dollars to improve the real Venetians lives while cutting down significantly the amount of tourists that clog their streets.

What a pathetic idea.

Ive been to Venice and lets say, I wouldn't have spent my money if I was charged a 'tourist tax'.

That would be an illegal discrimination of non Venetian EU citizens and end up in court pretty fast.

This would never happen in Europe. You can squeeze out the tourists as much as you want, happens everywhere but making it a touristic park and only allow tourists with a visa is against our nature/attitudes. Free movement of people in a city is very important. It's still a city to live & work in. I don't think the locals would like it even if they didn't had to pay. Imagine if cities like Paris or Bruges will do that too. There's a limit. Earning money is ok but not like this.

Visa-free travel for Japanese tourists, one would hope.

What happened to the sublagunare that I read about a few years ago? It was supposed to be a metro serving Venice.

http://veniceblog.typepad.com/venice...netian_su.html

Also, Wikipedia says there is a Translohr system in Venice. Is this true?

Is the connector to Venice open yet? Also, I'd read this is going to be the first Translohr with an underground station. Is this true?

Maybe, it's part of the "sublagunare" project, a tunnel (for the translohr) under the lagoon between airport and venice.

Does anyone know how long it will take to get from Mestre centre to the terminus in downtown Venice using that tram system?
