Central Japan 中部 - Nagoya 名古屋

Let's collect pictures, projects and information about Japan's 3rd largest metropolis, Nagoya. It is said that around 1% of world industrial output comes from Nagoya metro area (8.7 million people according to www.gazetteer.de), with Toyota (world's 3rd biggest automaker) being the best known local company.
Overall Nagoya is a veeery underated and unknown city despite of being plenty of interesting projects, such as new scrapers (especially the 247m Toyota bldg), the new Central Japan International Airport built on a manmade island, new freeway rings, the 2005 Aichi world exhibition...

Cities over 100.000 people in Nagoya MA, spreading over the prefectures of Aichi, Gifu and Mie:

Nagoya 2.171.378
Gifu 402.748
Toyota 351.068
Okazaki 336.570
Yokkaichi 291.106
Kasugai 287.619
Ichinomiya 273.709
Suzuka 186.138
Anjoo 158.826
Oogaki 150.238
Komaki 143.117
Kariya 132.060
Kakamigah 131.990
Seto 131.650
Toyokawa 117.356
Handa 110.819
Kuwana 108.417
Tajimi 104.134
Nishio 100.804
Inazawa 100.273

Nagoya subway map.
The first stations completed in 1957, being the total length of the network is 76.5 km with 74 stations.

Within Nagoya City there are some 170 km of rail lines:

76.5 km - Subway
41 km - JR Japan Railway (5 transfer stations to subway)
39 km - Meitetsu-Nagoya Railroad - a private suburban rail service, partly shared service on Tsurumai Subway Line
8.5 km - Kinetsu-Kinki Nippon Railway (suburban)
5 km - Tokai Kotsu Jigyo line

Now, add skyscraper pictures

hey,

I'm from nagoya... Well, I was born and raised there. Now I'm finishing up on my university study here in London. My dad's Japanese (Kyoto) and my mom is Italian :-)

here are some pics i took of my beautiful Nagoya:

some more here (not taken by me)

http://macha-yokohama.hp.infoseek.co.jp/nagoya.html

another building to be built in the area:
180m ushijima redevelopment project near the JR towers. due 2007.

the toyota-mainchi building due 2007 is also near the JR central towers.

they are also planning on rebuilding the "dai-nagoya building" infront of the JR towers by 2010. Rumours suggest a 250m class skyscaper.

FULLY AGREE
In fact, Nagoya is by far the wealthiest city in Japan.
Nagoya has the busiest port in Japan (by far the bigger than Kobe or Yokohama), and its industrial output is always No1 in Japan (twice as big as Osaka).

Thank you all for welcoming me.

Sakae is the district full of large department stores. A more interesting place to visit is oosu, a shitamachi style commercial area full of hiphop types, electronics stores as well as older traditional shops.

The JR central towers are awesome, i took the shinkansen through nagoya twice. They look great and are a real setpiece for the city. I will take a weekend trip to Nagoya in the next few weeks and i'll tell you what i think.

Can you go to Toyota's factories at all on group trips?
