Big in Beijing - cityscape and streetlife

From my trip to Beijing last week.

Beijing is a metropolis in northern China and the capital of the People's Republic of China and one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China. Beijing is China's second largest city after Shanghai, with more than 17 million people in Beijing's area of jurisdiction. The city's urban area has about 13 million residents. read more in wikipedia

Lets start at the very central Tian'anmen Square (literally, Gate of Heavenly Peace Place) in the dusk. The large square plaza is located near the centre of Beijing, named after the Tiananmen which sits to its north, separating it from the Forbidden City. I believe I was the only European there.

In the Forbidden City the next day.. raining again, but that cleaned the air. A lot of tourists, but mainly from within China.

The Forbidden City was the Chinese imperial palace from the Ming Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty. It is located in the middle of Beijing and now houses the Palace Museum. For almost five centuries, it served as the home of the Emperor and his household, as well as the ceremonial and political centre of Chinese government. Built from 1406 to 1420, the complex consists of 980 surviving buildings with 8,707 bays of rooms and covers 720,000 square metres (7,800,000 square feet). wiki

His name was Puyi and he lived from 1906 to 1967. He was the twelfth and final member of the Qing Dynasty to rule over China. The Qing Dynasty, also known as the Manchu Dynasty, was the last ruling dynasty of China, ruling from 1644 to 1912.

Entering the Summer Palace

The Summer Palace is mainly dominated by Longevity Hill (60 meters high) and the Kunming Lake. It covers an expanse of 2.9 square kilometers, three quarters of which is water. The central Kunming Lake covering 2.2 square kilometers was entirely man made and the excavated soil was used to build Longevity Hill. In the Summer Palace, one finds a variety of palaces, gardens, and other classical-style architectural structures.
