The construction of the 1.7km long landmark bridge with 500m main span cable-stayed across Sg. Johor is lead by Design & Build Contractor, Ranhill Engineers & Constructors Sdn Bhd. The two main pylon structures for this bridge each have a height of 150m.

Friday October 9, 2009

JOHOR BARU: Motorists using the stretch of the Senai-Desaru Express*way opened to traffic will now have to pay toll of between RM1.40 and RM15.20 beginning today.

The first phase of the expressway between Senai and Pasir Gudang was open to public on Sept 10 and users have so far been travelling for free.

Malaysian Highway Authority director-general Datuk Ir Ismail Md Salleh said in a statement that the toll collection would begin at the three locations namely Senai, Ulu Tiram and Cahaya Baru.

Buses will enjoy a 50% toll reduction until Sept 14 next year, he said.

The RM1.3bil expressway, constructed by Senai-Desaru Expressway Berhad, is expected to cut travel time from Senai to Pasir Gudang from one hour to 23 minutes.

Businessmen hope for completion of highway
By AUSTIN CAMOENS Monday April 19, 2010

KOTA TINGGI: Many local businessmen hope for the completion of the Senai-Desaru Highway (SDE) project because this will bring an increase in number of tourists to Desaru.

Food stall owner, Mohd Yusof Abd Kadir, 56, said he was disappointed when he heard the SDE highway would not be operational until next year as announced by Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman last month.

“Many of us are depending on the highway to open as it will boost tourism here,” he said. The father of eight said the highway’s opening could bring new development to Bandar Penawar.

Businessman Mustafa Ismail, 52, said Desaru was popular among Singaporeans and the highway would make it easier for them to visit the area.

“The highway will cut travelling time here by over an hour,” he said.

Mustafa said he often travelled to Johor Baru with his wife to buy groceries for their stall and the long drive was tiring.

Norasyikin Katiman, 45, echoed Mustafa’s sentiment because she believed the highway would make it easier for locals and tourists to travel to and from Desaru.

“The highway will surely boost tourism and our businesses as many of us rely on tourist arrivals especially during the weekends and public holidays,” she said.

However, SDE chief executive officer Mustaza Salim said the final 27km stretch from Cahaya Baru to Desaru would be fully operational by end of this year.

“The stretch of highway including the 1.7km long bridge spanning across Sungai Johor should be operational between Oct and Dec this year,” he said.

Mustaza said the delay in completing the bridge was due to careful calculations and high precision involved in connecting the bridge.

“The SDE is expected to be a catalyst to businesses and tourism in the southeast part of the state as it will lessen travelling time to these areas,” he said.

Malaysia’s Senai-Desaru Expressway Bhd has won bondholder approval to restructure its Islamic debt, according to an e-mailed press release issued by Ranhill Bhd late yesterday.

The toll-road operator will issue new Islamic medium-term notes equivalent to the redemption value of the existing debt, it said. The new issue comprises senior notes with a maturity period of one year to 20.5 years and junior notes from 21 years up to 28 years, it said.

The company said on April 16 it plans to restructure RM1.46 billion of Syariah-compliant bonds. Kuala Lumpur-listed builder Ranhill Bhd is a majority subscriber of convertible loan stocks in Senai-Desaru. -- Bloomberg

2011/06/07

KUALA LUMPUR: The third package of the Senai-Desaru Expressway (SDE) between the Cahaya Baru (Pasir Gudang) and Penawar (Desaru) interchanges will be opened to users starting Friday.

Malaysian Highway Authority director-general Datuk Ismail Md Salleh said with the opening of the final stretch of the expressway, no toll charges would be imposed for one month.

75km Senai-Desaru Expressway opens today
2011/06/09

The 27km portion of the Senai-Desaru Expressway which links Cahaya Baru in Pasir Gudang, to Penawar in Desaru, includes a 4km bridge spanning Sungai Johor.

JOHOR BARU: Travelling between southwest and southeast Johor will be faster and more comfortable with the opening of the 75km Senai-Desaru Expressway today.

The highway, costing RM1.4 billion, is one of the biggest infrastructure projects under the Ninth Malaysian Plan in Johor.

It provides an important transportation link to further boost the logistics and tourism sectors in the southern region.

With the highway, travel time is about an hour between Desaru, in the south-east, and the Second Link or Tanjung Pelepas, in the south-west.

This is a stark contrast compared with the 21/2 hours of travelling along the trunk road.

In conjunction with the opening of the new highway, codenamed SDE, motorists will enjoy a toll-free journey for one month from today.

Toll collection will begin from July 10.

Malaysian Highway Authority director-general Datuk Ismail Md Salleh said the highway was partially opened to traffic from Senai to Pasir Gudang last year.

He added the highway was ready with the completion of package three of the project, which linked Cahaya Baru, in Pasir Gudang, and Penawar in Desaru, covering 27km.

The project includes a 4km bridge spanning Sungai Johor.

"The highway will change the skyline of southern Johor.

"It offers another option for commuters who want a hassle-free and fast journey."

It is expected to strengthen the status of Johor Baru as the southern transportation hub for industry players as it provides logistical support for the industrial zones in Pasir Gudang, Senai and Tanjung Pelepas.

For tourism, it is set to revive the status of Desaru, which was once a popular place for beach activities. Its popularity declined because of the long travel time.

Malaysia Tourist Guide Association president Jimmy Leong said Desaru's tourism was severely affected by poor road conditions in the past.

He anticipated a steady growth of tourism activities in Desaru and adjacent areas with the completion of the highway, as well as the launching of the ferry service between the Tanjung Belungkor terminal in Kota Tinggi and Changi terminal in Singapore in April.

"The project will spur the growth in eco and agro-tourism sector."

Johor Lorry Operators Association vice-chairman Leow Hock Tiap said the highway would benefit transport operators travelling from the north to the south as they would have an alternative route to get to Pasir Gudang without having to bypass the city areas.

"This will alleviate congestion along the existing Pasir Gudang Highway.

"However, lorry operators in the south are not affected by the highway as they use an altogether different route to send their consignment."

On my way to Desaru through new Senai Desaru Highway. However, the highway is single carriageway. Only around 40 minute from pasir gudang to desaru.
