Ouch. Six murders this year for a town of ~2,609. That's a murder rate of about 230. For comparison, New Orleans had a murder rate of 53 at its peak.

Murder seems to be on the rise in Washington State.

But Grant County, especially the Wahluke Slope and gulch area .. not too typical of Washington generally.

Looks like we might regain our title as the West's second largest state in time for the next census. Maybe.

Washington (April 1, 2009): 6.668.200 (+80.600, +1.2%) - down from +99.600 (+1.5%) betw. 2007-08

http://www.ofm.wa.gov/news/release/2009/090629.asp

Arizona (July 1, 2009): 6.683.129 (+53.674, +0.8%) - down from +129.261 (+2.0%) betw. 2007-08

When the census comes out with parallel estimates (same methods, same date) we'll know much better.

We're going to have to think of ourselves as a 7,000,000 state. Quite a life changing event. (Yes that's melodrama...but only partially!)

Oh, I agree. Washington may still be #2 for all we know.

I hope we barely get a 10th congressional district and Arizona doesn't!

Speaking of the census . . .

At work right now I am doing appeals of addresses rejected by the Census Bureau during their address canvassing. You *would not* believe some of the obvious addresses they are missing. And I talked recently to a neighboring jurisdiction (City of Arlington) who said they aren't going to bother doing these appeals at all (I suppose they don't have the time/resources). And the other day I spoke to a couple people from the Census Bureau (one of whom was actually working for a contractor) and there are a ton of other addresses which are wrong but they are not in this category which will enable me to appeal them.

Perhaps much of this will get straightened out by the time they send out the Census forms, but it's becoming pretty clear to me that those who accuse the Census of undercounting are correct. Next time you look at a Census figure, add maybe 5-10% and that will give you a more accurate number.

Are they waiting for rooftop mechanical equipment or was there some other schedule blow?

(As far as the long walk - the temperature was pretty good - a wore a hat and had gloves that I didn't use. My feet were pretty worn out by the end and watch out for a bit of chafing! - TMI!)
I walked by that site on Thursday and they were using the crane to lift stuff to the Broadway side of the building. I didn't look close enough to see what it was, but three workers were taking it off the crane and into the interior of the building via a third story window.

That one's construction wall has a photo of the skyline that shows a building taller than Columbia Center around the Westlake area. I wonder if there's anything to it.

I was wrong about the Broadway building - it turned out quite nice. But than again, it looks NOTHING like the renderings as far as the use of colors and materials is concerned.

Here's the picture on the Broadway Building I was talking about. Sorry for the awful quality, I only had my cell phone with me. Anyone know if a tower like this is planned?

Yeah, but everybody in Arizona lives in lifeless suburban retirement communities, and they have to keep replenishing the dying old people with new dying old people in order to keep the rate up, and it's hard to keep this pace as society gradually ceases to treat women as baby factories (a good thing). Nobody does anything in Phoenix, either; they go to Scottsdale to shop. They've separated the urban from shopping experience--which might seem oxymoronic since these two are intrinsically intertwined.

Hey guys- I need some advice!

I think, now that Im 26, I know what I want to do after years of deliberation. I really want to get back into school to study Urban Planning. Its something I finally have some passion about. I have a BS in Organizational Communications from Eastern Wa University. I make about $31k a year, so Im sure Ill be shelling out for this thru students loans (again), but I think itll be worth it. I've been stuck in a dead-end call center job for 3 1/2 years that is getting worse and worse and starting to kill my drive to succeed in anything.

Whats the next step here?!?!

I'd say get an MA in urban planning or something similar. With loans (and hypothetically no job) you could graduate in 1-1.5 years if you're really motivated.

Jesse - any job where you have to wear a headset, occupy a cubicle and look at a monitor is soul-destroying. (Not to mention the horrors of Tukwila.) Escape while you still can and go for it! Advice: watch out for the student loans; bust your butt on this end to get the $$ before borrowing the "easy" money. I know at least one person who just hit 40 owing six figures. Yikes.

Seattle has lots of non-profit advocacy groups, related to everything from bicyling to low-income housing to growth management. Volunteering for one of them is a great way to learn an aspect of your future career, meet lots of talented people, learn skills (public speaking perhaps), and build a resume. The key is to volunteer in a large enough way that you get to do substantive work, rather than showing up occasionally to answer phones or lick envelopes.
