I like the cart for a coin thing but it's solving the problem of returning the cart across the parking lot, not the "I've pushed the cart a mile from the store and I can live without the $0.25" problem.

On the other hand I could definitely imagine homeless people going around collecting carts and bringing them back for the little bit of money, just like how the bottle refund works in other states.

We can't prevent it either way, but at least it's a cheaper loss for the store than a wheel lock cart.

DAMN did anyone else catch the game today? Hawks took it 58-0. By looking at ESPN, NBC sports, etc I know the national sports media didn't notice. Which doesn't surprise me.

Loved that game. Offense, defense, and special teams: we had all cylinders firing. Even with the outrageous penalty yardage earned (on both sides, for that matter).
Bring on SF!! |

Who else distinctly remembers the 45-0 game in 1988 or so, which was referred to in the broadcast? We ran four interceptions back for about 250 yards between them.
I love blowouts. |

I have a question about the carbon monoxide detector law that recently took effect. Is my recollection correct that this law was intended to avoid deaths caused by people using grills, camp stoves or ranges/ovens to heat their homes? If a resident doesn't have gas service to their condo and doesn't try to use a grill (propane or charcoal for that matter) to heat their home - what other sources of carbon monoxide exist in homes that could create a lethal concentration of the gas?

Fair points but I'm still thinking it's too much for many buildings. I can see in a 3 story 1950's/60's motel style apartment building with unreliable heating but a downtown high-rise without gas service (except to the ground floor restaurant) seems like a reach.

At $24 for a CO sensor (with a free smoke detector included), this is probably not an issue worth fighting over.

I'm also thinking about it because I just bought a new house in April of this year and it seems none of the detectors are CO sensitive. I would've thought my inspector might've picked up on this - he was pretty good. They're hard-wired and battery powered so I'm kind of wondering if I can swap the devices with a combo device but I'm probably not going to worry about it.

Looks like CO + smoke, with wire and battery backup is around $40. Cheap insurance if you have an attached garage. If not, and if you're all electric, I don't see why you'd need one.

Excellent (and free!) section in the DJC today. Here are a few gems:
"If you take away the absorption attributed to Amazon, the market activity would have been nearly flat" But lucky for us, we do have Amazon. "Demand [for retail space] is predicted to outpace construction by almost double during the 2012-17 period." Good think we didn't let [mhays] talk us out of all of those retail storefronts. |

The undercurrent to that retail story was that lack of retail construction would help vacancy rates normalize.
Another gem was about data center tenants learning about the greenest form of public transit in existence...elevators. |
