43 Inner ditch near castle's western wall has been made children's playground.

44 Panorama of the western part of exterior wall. For visual reference - central tower on the wall can be seen on photo no.12

45 Inner castle with Dome Church.

46 Main castle courtyard. Typical shot of Haapsalu castle. If there's any Haapsalu postcard or photo of castle, then it has 99,9% chance it's taken from this angle

47 This how it looks reversed - view from inner castle towards exterior wall. You can see gunpowder storage on the left, then Crescent tower, another tower in the middle, then another gate and finally one corner tower on right. Sry,that I don't know all tower names although considering how much time I spend each summer in Haapsalu,I really should know...

58 Lossiplats / Castle Square in front of main gate.

59 Old town hall (currently Haapsalu town museum),built in 1775.

Photos from the promenade. It's more of a construction site now,as workers hurry to finish it for this year's White Lady Days in august (reconstruction started last year)

60 Famous Haapsalu Kurhaus is also a victim of reconstruction works.

61 Walking east,towards Aafrika beach.

62 This was as far as I got (promenade literally ended few hundred meters from it as a rebar/concrete mess)

63 Walking back, panorama of the promenade.

64 Few close-up photos of the Kurhaus.

65

66

67 'Bridge to nowhere' Promenade reconstruction project also includes rebuilding few non-existing structures. This here is a beach 'bridge',common sight in resort beaches all around the world in early 1900s. Btw,what you see across the gulf,is Noarootsi / Nuckö parish. Historically Estonian Swedes lived there, but WW2 really cut the Swedish population there (currently somewhere around 10% are Swedes)

68 Continuing along the promenade.

70 Haapsalu 'skyline'

71 Promenade ends here, further in the distance is Haapsalu yacht harbour.

72 Now we'll take few side streets...

73 ..to reach Väike-Viik. It's a tiny enclosed bay, connected to sea with small dikes & overflow gates. For those of you,who haven't got a clue about Haapsalu shape - it's a H-shaped,with H's bottom connected to mainland.

74 Overlooking Väike-Viik.

75 Norwegian! 'Havly Inn' near Väike-Viik.

76 Panorama taken from Lahe street. This probably is the best location to take Haapsalu panorama.

77 With bit of imagination you can see a cloud dragon here

83 Haapsalu's Aleksander Nevski Church (built 1897) on the corner of Endla & Surnuaia streets.

84 Check out the crypt near the church.

85 Photos from old railway station area. Looks like Railway Museum has plenty of old railway stuff for restoration.

86 Haapsalu cargo station.

87 Old railway depot.

Damn, Haapsalu is a ghost town...a rather cosy one, though

Atleast it's perfect for our taste For Estonians place gets crowded, when two of them happen to be on same single square km

88 Locomotive from 80's. Could use a bit of paint & new windows.

89 House near the station territory. Looks to have been part of the station once.

90 Station watertower and kilometer marker.

..And last two photos.

93 Typical Soviet era industrial building. You'll find similar ones in almost every small town in Estonia. This one here was originally logistic & bus base, currently it has in addition to bus company various small businesses there.

94 Closer look.

I'll add some more photos later in the summer

There's something about this picture that I really like. I can't really describe it though.

The promenade has also been renovated so Haapsalu is even nicer now there than before! I go there each week as a guide on a tour from Tallinn. It is definitely one of my favourite places in Estonia.

Yes it does Are you planning to just visit Haapsalu and have a vacation there or are you heading to some specific event in Haapsalu in the summer? There's lots of stuff going on there

Oh and welcome to SSC!

No, we will not just visit Haapsalu (we will start in Tallinn for two days and after Haapsalu we will be heading for Latvia). In Haapsalu, we are intending to visit the Aiboland museum, the castle and possibly also take the ferry out to Ormsö. Can you recommend something else in Haapsalu or in the near area?

Ungru manor ruins outside Haapsalu. You can't miss that,as it's right next to Haapsalu-Rohuküla highway and you'll be driving along that (ferries to Vormsi depart from Rohuküla).
If you are adventurous, then there's also quite good spot outside Haapsalu, where you can see entire town. On the coast is some anonymous artificial hill - Map to it's location. From there you can see almost entir town and coastline (camera with telezoom lens is recommended! ) There's also a nice lighthouse not far from it,but I honestly can't remember how to reach it from some roads.
And as you are planning to visit Aiboland museum, then you should definitely try to visit Vormsi/Ormsö island. Really atmospheric place. Word of advice - the island is crawling with snakes (literally!),so you might want watch you steps there.
And drive around in Noarootsi/Nuckö parish and in rest of Läänemaa. Nature is the most impressive thing there, but you'll discover other things too.
Imho,Haapsalu itself can be best enjoyed by walking. It's rather compact and in few hours you can see everything in the city. Make sure that you don't miss the railway station and promenade
