By the looks of it, there are two main things going on. First that tower is extremely slender with a tiny footprint, and second, it is being built above a heritage low rise. I suspect the concrete thing is the main support of the building and has the elevators directly adjacent to it with the condo units cantilevered off to the side. This is likely to prevent the need to have a support column going though the historic building, and also to make the floor plans of the condos more appealing. The foot print looks to be so small there may be no more than 4 units per floor or as few as 2 large units per floor, and if so, having a central core would be a bit awkward.

You may be right but that render is pretty vague. It may have a core bank of elevators, it will most likely need larger supports then shown here.

A property developer in Quebec wants to use an old office building and change it into a luxury condo development. I've got to admit that I like this project. It is very well situated as well... interesting

I like what Quebec city is getting; it is a lot more European! Their projects are very selective, like something you will find in Oslo.

The renovation of older low to mid height office towers to condo is surprisingly common. There were many conversions here in the '90's. I watched some happening when I lived on St Clair Avenue, and also watched one at Yonge and Wellesley. In my experience the final result is generally a little less romantic looking than the proposed renderings, and they still look like commercial office buildings when they are completed. This one in Quebec looks very pleasing in the rendering and I hope it turns out aesthetically!

The added bonus for purchasers are taller ceiling heights. It's ok looking but nothing too speacial.

Hmmm.... I'm liking everything except the first view. That looks clunky.

I like that design. The colours of the exterior are a little dramatic, but it's about time frankly. Maybe a glass facade would appear better. For the most part though I'm impressed! Wouldn't mind seeing some work done with the TTC signage though. It's dated to me.

Well you'd expect nothing less then this from Alsop, from what I gather he is one of the key architects with this design. I can only assume he designed the exterior of the station.

Now is it Alsop himself, or Alsop designs? Because Alsop sold his name (which makes me scared to be writing this within his gravity defying box).

New design for an Ontario Government building that has been approved. Still waiting on final word on height, but we know it's 44 floors.

Posted by Elhanan1

Client: Ontario Realty Corporation
Scope of Service: Master Planning and Design
Approximate Value: $250M
Status: Rezoning Approved, SPA in progress

WZMH was engaged to design a new office tower at 880 Bay Street within the Queens Park Government Precinct as part of their Toronto Accommodation Plan. The 44 storey tower design is unique in Toronto for responsive design to solar orientation to east, west, south and north facades. The north side core elevator design has slender floor plates that are oriented to face south and provide maximum natural daylight penetration and views for occupants. At Street level the building podium and arcade design relates to the scale of the adjacent distinctive Macdonald Block arcades that wrap around the major street edges. The project is targeting a minimum of LEED Silver.
Rezoning approval was granted within period of 6 months from application.

Anybody in Winnipeg know what's going on with this proposal?

North Americans just don't seem to do malls very well. Many new shopping centres in Europe and Asia just blow this one out of the water.

Where are "nice malls"? I don't ever recall seeing one in my entire life.
