In the enclosure

This is a thread for those who are lucky enough to have a job to post - anonymously - about their unnamed workplaces and what goes on. Those who have worked but don't currently do so, in a paid sense, can post about past experiences. Students can f*** the f****** f*** off and keep their "observations" to themselves. Those who have never worked but want to..........well I dunno, maybe this is also for you.

My own workplace is like the baboon enclosure at the zoo, with silverbacks jealously guarding their troop, and basically simean behaviour being exhibited all over the place.

I believe that humans struggle in any group with more than 30 people, and don't relate properly with more than 50 people. Where organistions are bigger, tribes form.

Today at work a hated baboon had a sick child and had to leave early. Unpleasant comments were made. I wondered if people had dolls in draws, except we aren't allowed draws anymore, because we would be irresponsible and put dolls in them and stick pins in those dolls.

Instead of grown-up style desks with draws, the type sold in IKEA for 12 year olds, we are only allowed to have stupid little boxes in which we can put important bits of paper, tissue, voodoo dolls and invisible weapons. We carry these around and plonk them on any spare desklet we can find to work on for the day. We aren't allowed desks because they are too expensive.

We aren't allowed bins either, because we would only go and throw rubbish in them and other irresponsible things like that, so people now throw their rubbish in the recycling bins instead, randomly. We aren't allowed to file our paper because it costs sooooooooooo much to print it all out and store it, and we aren't allowed electronic filing either because it costs sooooooooooooo much and we ought to just delete everything to save that extra 0.000000000000000000000000000000001 pence in the costs of having a decent email box limit.

Hmm.. I do pretty much what I feel like at work. I have to dish out medication and do a pile of ridiculous paperwork, but mostly work consists of watching hour upon hour of Top Gear with the cast of Fraggle Rock. The pay is shite though, and the hours are a bit of a ballache, but that can be offset by taking one of the residents to the pub to watch the match. I also get in the cinema for free.

LOL yes, I was, that adds a sinister twist to things.

Instead of bins, we now have things called "desk caddies" which are made of cardboard and are tiny and you are supposed to put your recycling in them, but people just throw all their rubbish in them.

As usual, the zealots have gone TOO FAR and undermined the very thing they wanted to achieve, which was to persuade people to recycle more. By making it imposisble to throw stuff in bins, they figured, we'd recycle more - but of course the human spirit will not be defeated so I think recycling is actually going down now as people resist the bullying.

Some bright spark has also redesigned the paper recycling bins so they have narrow "letter box" type openings, so if you have a load of paper it's far quicker just to throw it away in the main bin (we all know it's not actually recycled anyway, don't we?) than stand there posting one page at a time through the narrow slot.

Oh yes, does anyone elses employer have a "good ideas" system? Ours is very amusing, but I must resist the temptation to share too much joy in one day, so you will have to wait.

Wasn't that in an episode of popular series 'Neighbours' in June 1988?

You're a student, and you talk to yourself? You might work with me! Say hello to the handsome bearded chap next time you see me.

We used to have a small bin for every desk. It was great, I could eat my morning fruit ration and throw all of the peel and shit into my own little bin without having to get off my fat ass.

Now we have one medium sized bin between 20 of us. I have to get up every time I want to throw my orange peel or plumb stone in the bin. They've practically put me off eating fruit. And it also means I have to wash my hands every time I put something in the bin as the stupid, smelly fucks have those horrible, brown-stained flap things on top of the medium-sized bin. It's impossible not to put my hand on the lid. Looks like some runny shit has slithered down the bin lid.

We also have some other types of recycling bin which the hippies have brought in.

Every day when I get home I deliberately throw all of my glass, tin and food left overs straight into my (non-recycling) wheely bin just to get my own back. Every last bit goes to land fill.

Karma.
