are those two "cleaned up" buildings as mentioned by arciga occupied? The right one may appear to be so, the left one looks a bit more out of maintenance, but someone might know more.

Rehabilitation of Pasig River intensified
Updated March 02, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Lito Atienza said the rehabilitation of the Pasig River has been intensified with the completion of major activities in the river clean up.

Atienza said 7,758 households have been relocated so far, representing 77.8 percent of the targeted 10,000 household relocates, in six relocation sites — one each in Montalban, Rizal; Taguig City; Trece Martires in Cavite, two in General Trias, also in Cavite; and another one in San Isidro, Rodriguez, Rizal.

“All resettlement sites established by the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC) include a full range of community amenities, including schools, health centers, multi-purpose halls, day-care centers, livelihood opportunities and recreation facilities,” Atienza said.

Atienza sits at the PRRC as chairman. Created in January 1999, the PRRC has embarked on the river’s rehabilitation through two major components: water-based in the areas of dredging, estero clean up, phytoremediation, bio-remediation, aeration and filtration; and land-based in the areas of setting materials recovery facilities (MRF), relocation of informal settlers along the riverbanks, linear park development and public advocacy.

Following the relocation of informal settlers, Atienza said the both sides of the river were transformed into environmental preservation areas (EPAs). This, he said, involved the development of linear parks, walkways and greenbelts.

“As of date, we have overshot our target for EPA development of 23 kilometers by .4 km as of year-end, and at least 2.4 km more in progress,” Atienza said.

NCCA, Manila to launch renovated Metropolitan theater by midyear
By Marvin Sy Updated March 02, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - The National Commission on Culture and Arts (NCCA) said Saturday it will hold a soft launch for the Metropolitan theater – called the Met by theater aficionados – this June and projected that the theater could be fully operational by December.

NCCA executive director and presidential adviser on cultural affairs Cecile Guidote-Alvarez said President Arroyo wanted the restoration of the Met to be expedited so it could be used this year.

Alvarez said the soft launch will be done this June on the 68th anniversary of Philippine-Korean Friendship Day.

The restoration of the Met, a historical landmark at Liwasang Bonifacio near the Manila Central Post Office, is being undertaken by the NCCA together with the Manila city government.

“Upon your directive, we will fast-track the Met restoration,” Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim told the President during her visit to the Met Friday.

A total of P100 million was provided for the restoration project, which Alvarez said would bring back to life one of the country’s historical landmarks.

Alvarez said the Met had deteriorated to the point of being a “really hopeless space,” with squatters taking shelter in the structure, which lost its roof.

Alvarez lauded the President for interfering in the restoration of the Met, which was delayed because of disagreements between the stakeholders.

“If the President did not interfere, this would not have been resolved,” she said.

Manila city engineer Armand Andres told the President that the theater’s roof has been repaired and the orchestra pit was no longer submerged in water.

In 2004, the President released P50 million to the NCCA to restore the theater. Three years later, Lim was reelected as city mayor and he revived the Manila Historical and Heritage Commission to manage and supervise the Met restoration project.

Completed and inaugurated in 1931, the Met was built in the art deco style, with prominent artists and architects contributing to its design, construction and beautification, including Juan de Guzman Arellano, Francesco Monti and Isabelo Tampinco.

During its glory days, the Met was a favorite venue for cultural entertainment such as zarzuelas, stage plays, operas and musical shows.

Historical accounts indicate that the theater was destroyed during the liberation of Manila by Allied forces in 1945. The Americans had it reconstructed, but it fell into disuse in the 1960s.

The theater saw intermittent repairs, restoration and use but eventually closed in 1996 after it fell into prolonged disuse.

The informal settlers along floodway are still part of Pasig River or Marikina river? ang dami nun.

It's not just a parking area, its a bus station
