Went to Manila yesterday (Saturday, March 13). I am disappointed by lots of trash (e.g. plastics, papers, food wrappers) along major thoroughfares of the city such as Espana and Taft. I am surprised to see vendors in large numbers overwhelming the Plaza Miranda, Post Office and right beside City Hall, aside from lots of trash on major corners. The supposedly loading bay in front of Bonifacio Plaza near City Hall has been blocked by Traffic Bureau, which is definitely an insane act! That area was designed for such thing, so the tendency is for the passengers to ride right in front of City Hall, causing chaotic traffic in that area.

This election, I advise Manilenos to vote the right person to the city hall. Even though I am not Manila citizen, this is our queen city. Every Filipino should have utmost concern to their capital city specially by advising Manilenos to vote for the better mayor.

New hospital in Manila to be named after Cory

MANILA, March 17 (PNA) -- Mayor Alfredo S. Lim announced on Wednesday that the new hospital in Sta. Ana, which will be named after the late President Corazon Aquino, will be inaugurated in April.

According to Lim, the is 10-storey high and boasts of air-conditioned rooms and modern facilities such as dialysis and x-ray machines and CT scan.

He told residents from the fifth and sixth districts who are to directly benefit with the completion of the hospital in Sta. Ana brought to six the number of city government hospitals serving the needs of Manila residents free of charge.

The project fulfilled Lim’s dream of establishing one hospital giving free medical services to poor residents in the city’s six districts.

During his first incumbency in 1992 to 1998, Lim established the Gat. Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center in District 1; Ospital ng Tondo in District 2 and the Ospital ng Sampaloc in District 4 to augment the then lone city hospital, Ospital ng Maynila (OM) which is located in District 5. OM was put up during the time of former Mayor Arsenio Lacson and when he died, it was continued by Mayor Antonio Villegas.

Lim then left with his successor the blueprint for the building of two more hospitals in the third and sixth districts but the plan was stalled for nine years, which is why Lim pushed through with it when he again assumed mayorship in 2007.

The Sta. Ana hospital situated in the city’s sixth district is the second since Lim became mayor again three years ago. The first, Jose Abad Santos Mother and Child Hospital, is located in the third district of Binondo.

Aside from free medical services and doctors, the mayor said these hospitals are also providing the indigent patients with free medicines as he has allotted a budget for the purchase of medicines, as well as a standby fund to replenish the hospital medicine budget once it is depleted. (PNA)

Lim is a liablility to the tourism industry.

that hospital is a donation of lucio tan..the land it sits is lucio tan's land,formerly owned by a bank,they signed a MOA before (money este memorandum of agreement) and was to be named before the billionaire's mother, so i dont know what happend why it was changed altogether for the memory of his greatest benefactor in poiltics..

so probably you could add that the hospital was one of the concessions agreed upon before the sale of century park to tan..

next in line is a hospital in binondo,somewhere along pasig river near the relocated jose abad santos high school, being built upon and donated by his schoolmate, andrew tan of megaworld/suntrust in reply to the continuation of the nearly abandoned and controversial cityplace project and the equally controversial adriatico gardens project aka. "maytubig land scam" (which land the condos being built is technically owned by an urban homeowners group)

Manila bans entry of provincial buses

STARTING APRIL 1, provincial buses will be banned from entering the City of Manila.

Mayor Alfredo Lim made the announcement after a dialogue with different bus operators operating in Manila.

Lim said that based on an earlier compromise agreement, he had allowed provincial bus operators to enter the city provided they agree to a rerouting scheme to reduce traffic in some areas, especially on Taft Avenue.

However, it was now necessary to impose a ban considering the pollution caused by the buses as well as the heavy traffic these cause in the city, he added.

Workers and students have also complained of the snail-paced traffic in some streets because of buses which pick up and drop off passengers just about anywhere.

Lim said he had also heard of allegations that some traffic policemen and enforcers were receiving bribe money from the operators of buses who had turned the Lawton area into a terminal.

“Almost every day, we take a lot of flak because of the bribe money which is supposedly changing hands in the Lawton area. We hear allegations about how the money is going to traffic policemen, the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau (MTPB) and just about everyone else. How can we remove this suspicion from people’s minds? Probably the only way is to make sure that these buses never enter the city again,” he said.

Meanwhile, Lim ordered his men to immediately act on complaints about traffic policemen or MTPB personnel receiving bribes from bus operators.

At the same time, he called on bus owners to consider the general public’s general welfare over their profit, saying they were supposed to be engaged in public service.

I just hope that Mayor Atienza will get back the City of Manila. He mentioned during the interview this morning at ANC that he wants to revive Baywalk and will continue the low cost tenements for the poor. He claimed that he built tenements in Baseco, Tondo. He will also implement the SC decision on the transfer of oil depot.

According to Atienza, Lim has not built a single house for the poor, he destroyed Baywalk, Lim and the city council defied SC's order to transfer the oil depot, etc.

Fire razes shanties, school in Manila

MANILA: A fire that was caused by a malfunctioning air conditioner destroyed shanties and a school in Tondo, Manila yesterday morning, leaving around 60 families homeless.

No one was reported hurt or killed during the 45-minute fire, which reached the fourth alarm and destroyed around P300,000 worth of property. Some of the residents used rafts to cross a waterway and avoid the fire.

More than 1,000 students were evacuated from the Dr Juan Nolasco High School. Principal Rosalinda Nepomuceno said the fire destroyed the second and third floors of the school building. She said they will conduct repair work and classes are expected to resume on Monday.

Senior Fire Officer 2 Lords Hernandez said the fire broke out at the house of Edna Javier at around 10:30 a.m.

“Javier admitted that the air conditioner they were using overheated and exploded. She became frantic when she saw that the air conditioner was emitting smoke that she tried to quell it with water. The water, however, just worsened the situation since the electricity was not shut off,” he said.
