PETA calls for Manila Zoo's closure anew
JESSE EDEP, GMA News
07/14/2011 | 10:19 PM

An animal rights advocate on Thursday renewed its appeal to the government to close down the Manila Zoological and Botanical Garden, or more commonly known as Manila Zoo.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) said the animals kept in Asia’s oldest zoo “are denied everything that is natural and important to them."

“They are housed in cages that don’t come close to the jungles, deserts, and forests that are their natural homes. They have no choice in their diets, mates, or living companions," PETA said in a statement.

On Thursday, a day after the sorry condition of the Manila Zoo became abuzz on Twitter, presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said it is urging concerned citizens to help restore the 5.5-hectare zoo.

He also said the Bureau of Animal Industry is already taking steps to improve the living condition of the animals.

“They made a plan of action to uphold the welfare of the animals that should be led by zoo officials," Lacierda said, noting that animals in the Philippines are protected under the Animal Welfare Act of 1998.

He said it is noteworthy that concerned citizens have expressed the willingness to help the Manila Zoo improve its facilities and raise its standards.

“We are encouraged by this demonstration of public spirit on the part of our fellow citizens. It is a positive sign that the citizenry wants to be part of the solution and not just point out a problem," Lacierda said.

Those who wish to help in raising funds to restore the Manila Zoo may call telephone numbers (02) 468-9498 and (02) 383-6862, according to the Palace.

Huli kong punta dito sa Zoo, mga 8 years old ata ako nun, about 2002. ang naaalala ko nun, may mga wrappers ng junk food yung mga cages ng tiger..basta madumi at makalattalaga.. Sana either i-modernize na lang nila yung facility kasi historical place din pala ang Manila Zoo, being the very first Zoo in Asia..

The Very Sad State of Manila Zoo
Written by Karen Ang Features, Lifestyle, Tourism Jul 13, 2011

When I was in grade school, we used to have field trips at Manila Zoo (http://www.manilazoo.org/). The zoo was in a sad state back then but after reading my friend Nix de Pano’s blog post, I became upset at how neglected the zoo is now. I will repost photos and some excerpts here.

The Manila Zoo is a 5.5-hectare zoo located in Manila, Philippines. It opened on July 25th, 1959. This zoo is almost 50 years old. The problem? It really does look 50 years old. Another problem? It receives millions of visitors every year, local and foreign. What a shameful tourist destination it is.

Dirt-cheap entrance fees. Probably one of the reasons for the zoo’s poor maintenance. Sadly they have no right to charge more either, based from the condition of the zoo.

Map of the zoo. Looks small and simple enough. But “small” is one of the zoo’s biggest problems.

Old, rusty cages. Hardly any animal in sight.

This is Mali, the zoo’s biggest attraction. He is an Asian elephant that arrived at the zoo as an orphaned calf donated from Sri Lanka. He is the biggest attraction but what kind of an enclosure is that? It’s sad, small, tight and boring.

Yes there is a tiger in this photo. Yes those are dead leaves from who knows how many days or weeks. Why isn’t anyone cleaning up the mess?

An even worse mess–literal trash? What is wrong with this zoo’s maintenance?

You can almost see its bones. Sick and not in the cool way.

How could it possibly get worse than that?

How about this rabbit’s untreated wound?

Or this ostrich with a dead eye?

please help by signing the petition.
nakakaiyak naman ang presen t condition ngayon ng zoo. kawawa ang mga hayop rito

In other countries, they build their infrastructure grand but here we do it bare and haphazard, that's the difference..

The Mayor of Manila should be at the forefront of promoting business, tourism, urban planning and cleanliness. It is the capital, you knowThe mayor should at least deployed 30 e-jeepneys or e-buses to service manila to lessen pollution. The fact that most of Metro manila's jeepneys pass thru or converge there.

I only knew about the issue on Manila Zoo when I watched the news last night. I could say that the blogger was irresponsible. The photos were taken from 2008 - 2010, and if only he/she knew that the zoo is undergoing renovation now, the issue would not have created public attention.

The zoo manager also appealed to the visitors not to litter in the zoo. the photos of tiger with litters around was because the visitors were throwing something to awaken the tiger, which should not be. The zoo manager also told that the zoo is already 70% renovated.
