Why don't they reconstruct the domes of the Berliner Dom like it was before WWII? The lantarns made the Dom more impressive, especially the lantarn on the biggest dome.

the dom was reconstructed by the communist GDR in the early 80s. a few years ago the golden cross on the biggest dome was renewed and the discussion started to reconstruct the lantarns on all 5 domes...BUT, the dom as it is today is under heritage protection (as a monument) so itīs not allowed to change it in any way...

That new golden dome which stands now on the top of the main dome is an new styled adjustment on a building under heritage protection. So my point is: why can't they reconstruct the historical lantarns on top of the 5 domes, while they can place an small golden, modern styled dome on top. So that's my question. I liked the Dom more with the 5 lantarns on top. This golden lantarn is just modern adjustment on an old building

In the case of Rothenburg, I noticed that a lot of the buildings insides were destroyed but a lot of the outside/framing were relatively intact. When they were rebuilding, did they just tear the ruins down and start from scratch, or did they work with the ruins?

It is in process of reconstruction but its very slow since the whole city was burnt down and needed a money for reconstruction. We hope it will be finished in next few years.

Good photos of the Berlin Cathedral restored. What a magnificent city Berlin must have been pre 1944, must have rivalled Paris and Vienna, hard to believe now how anyone would want to destroy their unparalleled heritage to satisfy their own ego.
