Merkinė, Lithuania

Lost city - Merkinė, one of former centres of Grand Duchy of Lithuania. During wars this town lost almost everything, except of Gothic/Baroque church.
Main lost buildings:

- Dominican monastery (XVI-XVII c.)
- Jesuit monastery
- Dominican baroque church
- St. Cross baroque church
- St. Peter baroque church
- King's palace
- Renaissance cityhall
- Town boundary markers (XVI c.)

City hall was demolished in 1885, here was built typical project small ortodox church, as result of russification of lithuanian people.

Drawing by N. Orda.
Ruins of King's palace and city hall in the end of XIX c.

The building has undergone an amazing metamorphosis. I hope that they will change the environment - maybe demolish the fence and create fantastic square ( becouse conemporary fence is unhistorical. Historical fence look like this:

now:

But I think that it isn't a good idea to rebuild this. I'm all for open space there.

Also they demolished the prison that was there. In the 20. century there was a building of Polish County Office of Public Safety 'Powiatowy Urząd Bezpieczeństwa Publicznego'. They kept oppositionists there. There's a photo of this prison: http://slady.ipn.gov.pl/portal/sz/85...Wloclawku.html

I wonder how long that bike will last there Great efforts though, really makes one looking up for the reconstruction of large parts of destroyed cities

That's just the way all cities should do reconstructions. Just historical, a few modernist buildings perhaps (like 1/14 of all buildings is modernist) so the place will get a nice make over

Amsterdam

These canal buildings were demolished for the building of an Amsterdam metro line. Since they were listed as national monuments, the court ordered them to be rebuilt once the metro was finished.

Before destruction:

For all Germans on this site

The Amsterdam example just shows that the thing that has to be done in all German cities is easily done, if only the WILL is there or a common desire to enjoy the beautiful detailed and harmonic buildings from before the destructions of WW2 and the following destructions by the governments of the BRD and GDR.

Every one feels more comfortable and pleased in those intimate and cozy streets and squares from before 1945 than in the spacious and deserted (treeless) streets flanked by cold bunkerlike buildings from after the war.
Those windy dark spacy places offer .....nothing but a feeling of fleeing them as quick as possible.......

Improving the quality of "historic" city building

The Poles prove that they develop an increasing sense of quality when they are trying to rebuilt demolished historic (former German) towns like Gorlice, Elblag, Gdansk, Wroclaw, Sceczin and Poznan.
The buildings in Gorlice has decent historic outlines and proportions, very nice colours and show also a decent artmanship.
They are improving now on the way they try to rebuilt the lost heritage.
In Germany only in Dresden is tried the same, but here everytime some modernistic "thing" is built in between the rekonstructed (in a simplified way) houses. They are simply unable to reconstruct one little part of a huge destructed area without spoiling it with the omnipresent modernistic "things".
