It certainly isn't "the most common thing". And it mostly happens to smaller historicist or later (modernist) churches. While of course it's sad to see this. There's really good examples of church conversions at this thread:

Of course it did. Not because of ideological reasons but usually because they thought those monuments and statues hindered traffic.
