They are really quite different styles.

Art Nouveau, circa late 1800's to early 1900's, was a style noted being derived from nature or natural forms, such as plants and floral patterns, and was epitomized by Belgian, French, and other European Architects. Louis Sullivan in the USA was the most well known user of this style, although other architects incorporated many elements of the structures of the time.

Art Deco popularized during the French Exposition, soon found it's way to the USA and it's greatest expression and use in the many booming cities of the 1920's till the onset of WWII in the early 40's. It's style took images from Egyptian motifs popularized by the discovery of King Tut's tomb, and South American civilizations, plus American Indian patterns, and is noted for the use of wild and vivid primary colors and angular patterns.

NYC - Chanin Building

image hosted on flickr

5429 / chanin building, nyc by janeland, on Flickr

The Chanin Building,at 122 East 42nd Street, was designed by Sloan & Robertson from 1927-1930 with Irwin S. Chanin, one of the most notable developers in the city, and closely modeled on Eliel Saarinen's plan for the Chicago Tribune Building. This 56-story Art Deco structure, reaching 649 feet, was the third tallest building in the world when completed and is one of the most significant New York skyscrapers of the 1920's, as it is one of the earliest with a solid base, setback massing, and a buttressed crown that was once illuminated at night

Romanian art-deco: all are still standing although the ARO building looks very worn down these days. The Union Hotel has been renovated, though!
