THEATER TUSCHINSKI [1919-1921] - Amsterdam, NL

Pathé Tuschinski is a movie theater in the Netherlands in Amsterdam commissioned by Abraham Icek Tuschinski in 1921 at a cost of 4 million guilders. The interior and exterior are a spectacular mix of styles, as designed by Hijman Louis de Jong; Amsterdam School, Jugendstil, Art Nouveau and Art Deco. The main auditorium hosts many premieres of Dutch films. It is considered as one of the most beautiful cinemas in the world.

Thats one fair replacement for whatever used to be there!
If there is a necesity to replace a fancy andbeautifully ornate building at least one has to do it well!
Something we have to re-learn to do today...

New Orleans Lakefront Airport

image hosted on flickr

New Orleans Lakefront Airport by Brother O'Mara, on Flickr

Quote:
Commissioned by Governor Huey P. Long and opened as Shushan Airport in 1934, this building was a gorgeous example of Art Deco architecture and decoration. In 1962 it was covered in concrete to serve as a fallout shelter and in 2005 it suffered badly at the hands of Hurricane Katrina with water coming in from both ground flooding and a damaged roof.

From 2011-2013 they've been working to restore it to its former glory - to remove the concrete, uncover the murals, expose all the old marble and fixtures.

Another excellent example of art deco architecture is this tight building in Buenos Aires Argentina:

I've always loved 500 5th, so very New York City and so much better than these latest glass and steel efforts which have become so predictable and boring and relying solely on their enormous height to make any impact.
