Thanks mate and I am sorry that I have taken so long to respond. The Fjord area is unpredictable all year round. I would suggest that you monitor the weather while you are there and then take a helicopter + cruise package - you will get the best of both worlds
However, I have been told that Milford Sound is even better when it rains because of the fact that the entire fjord turns into one huge mountain of waterfalls - you can get some great photos .... like these:

It is great all year round - in summer it is very hot and there is lots to see and do in the area - Queenstown is known as the adrenaline capital of the world (this is where commercial bungy-jumping started) ..... you will not be bored
