I agree, but this recladding is better than nothing!

First Canadian place isn't even a supertall (300m+) so it's not even in the top 10 tallest buildings in North America.

Here's a list of the tallest buildings in North America up to First Canadian Place:

(Does not include ones under construction like the new One World Trade Center.)

1. Willis Tower (Chicago) - 442.1 m
2. Trump International Hotel & Tower (Chicago) - 423.4 m
3. Empire State Building (New York City) - 381 m
4. Bank of America Tower (New York City) - 365.8 m
5. Aon Center (Chicago) - 346.3 m
6. John Hancock Center (Chicago) - 343.7 m
7. Chrysler Building (New York City) - 318.9 m
8. New York Times Tower (New York City) - 318.8 m
9. Bank of America Plaza (Atlanta) - 317 m
10. US Bank Tower (Los Angeles) - 310.3 m
11. AT&T Corporate Center (Chicago) - 306.9 m
12. JPMorgan Chase Tower (Houston) - 305.1 m
13. Two Prudential Plazza (Chicago) - 303.3 m
14. Wells Fargo Plaza (Houston) - 302.4 m
15. First Canadian Place (Toronto) - 298 m

This was built 40 years ago... what do you want them to do... implode it?

yes, but you have to include fcp's antennae if you include the new york times antennae, and if you do, it is in sixth place... people always seem to forget that the antennae makes the fcp 355m tall...

Spires count, antennas do not.

The thing sticking out on top of the New York Times tower somehow qualifies as a spire rather than an antenna. I think it's cheating but it counts towards it's total height.

If antennae were included, then the Patronas Towers wouldn't have surpassed the Willis (then Sears) Tower when they were built in 1998. Their roof height is shorter than the Willis, but their spires make them taller.

How do you just "redesign" a building that's been standing for 40 years?
Do you understand how chaotic working conditions for both construction teams and tenants of the building would become?

look at the axa in paris, it looks like a different building, its taller, and doesn't have any similarities to the old one, IMO

The original AXA was a unimpressive and undistinguished building. FCP is the tallest ever built in Canada, and anchors Toronto's skyline, making it an icon. The idea was not to completely transform the tower, but simply to refresh it.

It will "shine" when it is done. Have patience! It will be a spectacular improvement.

ps the reason it is technically not a "supertall" is that it does not cheat and include the antennae, as so many other towers around the world have.

Ain't it the truth? If I had a nickel for every time I saw an antennae called a "spire", or the height
included of it included, I'd be rich!

No!! Honestly I don’t how you get that impression. I love this tower’ and its pure Canadiana. I just think that the cladding jobs were lack-lustre regarding both the original, and the current, examples. As I have stated, they dropped the ball on the cladding. Moreover, with the new redo, why not express you’re self. Why not get a little crazy with the big, tall tower that gives/gave them such awesome (blown outright),............... opportunities.

Because of funding. They are already spending $100-million to reclad the building as is. They did not want to go over budget by doing anything that you're talking about.

First hints of new cladding.

It seems to be a tedious procedure.

Right, it should speed up now. They've been replacing the sign and now that they've hit the windows, it should take half as much time to get it done.
