The Managing Director of Bhadra, Prem Bajaj, who was here on Sunday to hold discussions with the operating foreign airlines, said the firm was taking care of the ground handling in Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Chennai, Coimbatore, Mangalore, Trichy, and Kolkata airports. The target was to handle 96 flights of foreign airlines a day from these seven airports. It could take care of 1,000 tonnes of cargo from Chennai, the hub of operations.

In Thiruvananthapuram international airport, the new ground handler is operating for 14 flights a week and in Kozhikode, 21. “There is a substantial market in Kerala and we are here to provide quality service with a humane touch. We have held talks with many foreign airlines and three major airlines will be on board with us from February,” he said.

Battery-operated passenger step ladder imported from France had already reached Thiruvananthapuram airport. Mr. Bajaj said the firm had spent $100 million to procure the latest ground handling equipment and had set up a facility in Coimbatore to train the personnel. The ground handling of three aircraft and a freighter can be done at the same time.

Airport to have digital display boards[Finally...]

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore airport will soon install a digital flight information display system at the departure and arrival bays. Work for installing the boards will be awarded in three weeks' time. The delay was due to the tender being awarded for nearly six airports in the country, said Peter Abraham, director, Coimbatore Airport.

Responding to a letter from Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore (RAAC), which demanded a digital display boards for the use of the public, the airport director said he had not forgotten to install the digital boards.

The second suggestion made by RAAC, however, was struck down by the airport director. The RAAC had suggested that a baggage counter like the one in Hyderabad airport be installed in Coimbatore, which will display details of the first and last baggage uploaded for the aircraft and placed on the transport conveyor. This is helpful to passengers waiting to get their baggage.

Domestic connectivity is improving... CBE-Surat will be very successful as lot of textile business travellers will be benefited...

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/c...w/11745929.cms

SpiceJet to connect Surat with four other destinations

SURAT: After Delhi, Mumbai and Mangalore, Surti high-fliers can now fly to some other important destinations like Kolkata, Goa, Bengaluru and Coimbatore.

With the successful launch of its maiden flight service connecting the diamond city with Delhi, Mumbai and Mangalore, SpiceJet now has added four new destinations which will facilitate a large section of residents and business people from these cities to directly fly to the textile and diamond hub.

Flight service to Goa, Coimbatore, Kolkata and Bengaluru was announced by SpiceJet on Friday. Surti passengers now will be able to directly travel to Goa and Coimbatore after change of aircraft at Mumbai. Whereas, for Kolkata and Bengaluru, even the return journey will be possible after change of aircraft at Delhi and Mumbai.

Official sources said Goa is a favourite tourist destination among Surti travellers and the direct flight service will give a boost to tourism. Direct connectivity with Kolkata, Bengaluru and Coimbatore would bolster business between the four cities and Surat. "We have added four new destinations in just two days of launching the flight service connecting Surat.

Few more important destinations across the country will be added soon in the next few days" said a SpiceJet spokesperson.

Rohit Mehta, president, Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI), said, "Surat is now air connected with seven destinations. Many more are likely to be announced in the next few days. This will not only boost tourism in the city, but also give a fillip to textile and diamond business."

Two aerobridges put to use at airport

Two aerobridges for easy and convenient transit of passengers from the terminal building to the aircraft and vice versa were formally put to use at the Coimbatore Airport on Monday. Kavundampalayam MLA V.C. Arukutty inaugurated the new facility.

Talking to The Hindu , Airport Director K. Peter Abraham said that the two aerobridges were installed at the expanded and modified terminal building. The entire exercise had been carried out at a cost of Rs. 72 crore.

The aerobridges had been brought from the Hyderabad Airport. Transportation, reassembling and improvements alone had cost Rs. 3.5 crore.

Now, passengers boarding the aircraft either travel by bus from the terminal building to the tarmac or walk up that distance and board the aircraft. So was the case with passenger disembarking from the aircraft and wanting to reach the terminal building. With the aerobridges, the passengers from the terminal building could get on to the aircraft directly and similarly passengers arriving at Coimbatore could get into the terminal building with ease and convenience.

Passengers were protected from rain and soaring mercury levels and movement of vehicles or passengers on the tarmac was also reduced, Mr. Abraham said.

The aerobridges could be used for connecting the terminal building with aircraft of any type. At present, all the airlines were not ready to use the aerobridge. To begin with, aircraft operated by Indigo and Air Arabia would use the aerobridge. Other airliners would start using them shortly.

Using the aerobridge bridge requires some ground handling support which some of the airliners were yet to get. For example, a docked aircraft need to be pushed back so that the aircraft could take a turn and get onto the runway.

Airliners such as Jet, Jetlite, Spice Jet, Kingfisher and Silk Air were expected to get the facility shortly for using the aerobridge while Air India was expected to start using the aerobridge within the next 30 days.

The aerobridge installation was part of the modernisation of the airport terminal building with a capacity to handle 350 arriving and 350 departing passengers at given time.

The increased departure area had 5,962 sq m and three conveyors, two elevators and two escalators besides one lift for ailing and aged passengers using wheel chair.
