Thanks for these great photos! Antwerp really looks like a great town. I love the train station. I think it's my favorite in the world.

Why do you call Antwerp a "mini-Berlin"? I'm curious, because I don't see the similarity.

Great pics! I must say you took a very alternative route from the central station towards the city center, you missed the famous 'fashion' streets.

Did you also visit the other parts of the city center?

That alternative route was one of the best things that happened in Antwerpen, besides visiting the riverfront. The city was exceptionally cool, friendly and different.

I did visit other parts of the city, particularly the center (where fairs and street events were taking place), but most regrettably my camera died. Furthermore, it died just as the sun was clearing away the hazy skies and beautiful streetscapes were presenting themselves to me. Antwerpen was great! I loved being there and I will for sure return.

Lastly, I feel the Berlin comparison, while only superficial, is actually quite apt. Many residential neighborhoods in Antwerpen had that same interesting emptiness and funk that Berlin's neighborhoods possess. Long, straight empty streets, oftentimes devoid of landscaping, with buildings arguably in need of a paint-job. I do believe Antwerpen and Berlin share a very unique character that I will describe as 'gritty-dirty-casual."

I can see it.

It are both cities were there is a lot of space for creativity and art, where there is nightlife far above average and on top of that Antwerp looks a bit rough like Berlin.

In my opinion Antwerp is a mix between Amsterdam and Berlin.

Precisely! It is as if you took the idea directly from my mind.

The immediate outskirts of Antwerpen are Berlinesque in the ways you eloquently described, while the center has a very pronounced Low-Country/Amsterdamesque feel. However, I had to leave A'dam out as it would have just complicated my description (especially considering my comparison to Berlin did enough).

Thanks!

I should've gone to Antwerp instead of Brussels. I have never liked Brussels all that much. It's not a bad city, it's just never impressed me much. There are so many better cities of it's size category in Europe, that it can't compete.

I think Brussels is a great city but Antwerp also is.

The difference is that Antwerp is easier to fall in love with. I think Brussels needs some more time than Antwerp or most other cities.

But I tend to believe that most people like Antwerp more than Brussels so I really recommend you a visit.

Well, currently, I must give the one-up to Brussels as the city has been so good to me during each of my visits. I love it there, and its central location makes it such a desirable locale for me to live. I love the Flemish-French mixture.

Antwerpen deserves a return trip. It was Sunday, the weather was so-so, and despite that I still had a great time. Perhaps once I see it again I will fall further in love with the place and never wish to part. I'll have to see.

You should return on a sunny friday and also spend the night in Antwerp.
Let's see if you -after that- still prefer Brussels to Antwerp

Even though I like Antwerp a lot, I also prefer Brussels. Nothing wrong with I would say. Itīs just a matter of feeling.

But letīs not discuss this in this topic. This topic is way too nice and itīs a shame the topic starter did not go to the shopping streets and the fashion area because this is a very nice and lively part of Antwerp!

The topic start did go to the fashion and shopping streets in the city; unfortunately, his camera died on the way there!

The biggest disappointment of Antwerpen was that I couldn't continue to photograph it!
