81 Black Prince Road (Parliament House) | Lambeth | 24 fl | U/C
As London Lad said in the Full Summary Thread I don't think we have a thread for this one - so here we go;
![]() Keith Williams wins Vauxhall tower approval 25 September, 2009 By Elizabeth Hopkirk Keith Williams has won permission for his controversial 24-storey tower for Vauxhall after a four-day planning inquiry. Lambeth council rejected the scheme in February on the grounds it would damage the setting of the World Heritage Site across the river. There were also objections from Westminster City Council, English Heritage and local residents. But this week the planning inspector overturned Lambeth’s ruling. Cabe had also thrown its weight behind the design. The 11,150 sq m development is the practice’s first tall building. It comprises 101 flats and 1,770 sq m of commercial space and will replace a disused sixties office block in Black Prince Road. Keith Williams Architects is better known for cultural and civic projects including Wexford Opera House and the Earth Galleries at the Natural History Museum. Williams, who thought his lack of experience would count against him when Irish developer Ristoia Ltd was interviewing architects two years ago, said: “I am very pleased that this exceptional project has finally been consented. The scheme will bring important regeneration benefits to the locale and a significant new tower to this part of the city. “We are also very interested architecturally in where that takes the practice. It’s a new type of building for us and to be making buildings of that nature is interesting and inspiring.” A spokesman for Ristoia said: “We are delighted to receive the permission. We hope shortly to progress the development as the economic climate improves.” The site is a block inland from the river and just downstream from Hampton House, a cluster of taller towers designed by Foster and Partners which has also won planning approval. Hmm.. I'm not sure.. would have to see more detailed cladding renders, from Salamance place I like it, has a good shape, not to unusual but creates a good relationship with the not so exciting box next to it, however from the north elevation, it looks stumpy, far to wide and to be honest a little cheap. In my opinion the north elevation would have benefited from an glass facade divided up, rather than huge windows and huge pieces of facade that just emphasise the bulk and stumpyness of the design.

Gawd. Not a fan myself. Reminds me a little of Leeds' Bridgewater Place only more awkward.

Would look a hell of a lot better if it was all glass and not with that awful cladding.

"Will replace a disused sixties office block "
Who could complain about that improvement

Somebody has gone PR crazy at AJ as they have loads of images of the scheme here.
http://www.architectsjournal.co.uk/n...208798.article [IMAGES + PLANS] Keith Williams Architects has finally been given the go-ahead for its first tower - this 24-storey office and apartment block in Black Prince Road, South London Originally turned down by Lambeth Council in February, the contentious 11,110 m² scheme in Vauxhall, near the River Thames was approved following a four-day public enquiry. Housing 101 flats and 1,770 m² of office space, the tower is to sit between the C19th railway viaduct into Waterloo and the surrounding ‘tight knit Victorian street pattern and dense recent development which surrounds it’. Describing the scheme, Keith Williams said: ‘The base is surmounted by a blade-like tower which terminates in a sculpted pinnacle at the summit ‘The parallelogram plan form combined with the vertical taper to the façades gives the composition its distinctive blade like appearance accentuating its verticality’. The project tower will be clad in white reconstructed stone. A spokesman for Developer, Ristoia, said: ‘We are delighted to receive the permission. We feel that the development will assist in regeneration of the site and will be a positive development for the area. We hope shortly to progress the development as the economic climate improves.’ |

well you could find the info on skyscrapernews - you'll then know the height to the nearest centimetre, you might even find high res images and then there's the small thing that story was run several weeks ago!

This one is now under construction, the crane visible from the river. It has been renamed 'Parliament House'.

Thanks for the photo DarJoLe. Do you know if there have been any changes or is the scheme the same as before?

This one has completely slipped under my radar from years of searching the threads, first time I've seen it!
Has Strata had a bairn?
