When they say "National" do they mean National for Scotland or National for GB?

well he has a point. its always in England that theres is a British National Arena of some sort e.g The Manchester Velodrome which is where the GB team are based. How come everything in Scotland is only for scots? In Enlgand national can be both for Great Britain or just for England but at least it opens its arms to all of Britain as well.

for example in the future the Glasgow velodrome will probably be only be for scottish cyclists to use, whereas athletes from Wales, NI and England may use Manchester or London.

'National' is only a name. The NEC (Birmingham) being called 'National' doesn't make it any more preferable to, say, ExCeL.

Anyway... what chance a regular sporting team playing out of there, say ice hockey or basketball?

Don't be so small-minded, it's just a name. You think English cyclists will be turned away at the door?! To be fair who in England or Wales will have to travel to Glasgow to train? No-one. They have Manchester and London velodromes.

It's actually to be the Sir Chris Hoy Veldrome. He had to move to Manchester to train. One wonders if any less motivated Scots gave up the sport due to lack of facilities...

...or southwest Englanders (!)... Why is it small minded to point out? It's an ambiguity which is a bit unsettling but it could rattle off a constitutional debate without end. Scotland does have its own version of everything these days: Scottish National gallery, Scottish geographic society, Scottish Exhibition Centre, National Library of Scotland, Museum of Scotland etc. etc. Which, if you are English, thinking you are British, is odd to discover when you go to Scotland. So all those "National" thingies in London for England or for the UK? It would be nice to understand it.

I don't think it should be unsettling at all. Scotland as a part of the UK has national significance in its identity, therefore if we mention it is the national facility it is just that.

London is the UK capital with all of the advantages and disadvantages that this brings, therefore as the whole UK taxes are distributed from London and the UK parliament and government jobs are based in London then the facilities are UK national ones.

Think of it this way, Hampden is the national stadium for Scotland as Wembley is the national stadium for England, Millenium is the national stadium for Wales, all seems to be fair and equitable.

Why should there be any difference for velodromes, swimming facilities, rugby stadia, conference facilities, indoor arenas etc etc etc.

Oh and remember, Murrayfield was paid for exclusively by the SRU there was absolutely no government help and Hampden was only given lottery funding for the final part of the stadium, which is why the main stand is the only decent part of the stadium, the rest was done on the cheap.

Indeed. The south-west is sadly marginalised on many things. I hope this changes.

These days? This is nothing new. In case you didn't know, the Scottish nation has been around for a wee while now.

Ah, you see, there-in lies the rub - the two are interchangable to many an Englander. The reason being, I think, when our two nations united the existing capital of England become the seat of government for all-Britain. And any post-Union institutions became the National whatever.. some represented the whole (Britain) and some represented the part (England). But like I said, I think it's a bit muddled up in the English psyche. Which, genuinely, is a real shame.

Dinnae worry yersel Stephen. No animosity. I'm just saying the National BLANK of Scotland (there's a joke in there somewhere!) is nothing new. And the blurring of "British" and "English" is sadly institutionalised. Enough said.

So the east ends of London and Glasgow are getting well needed investment.
Happy days Rule Brittania!

The Scottish Rocks (to be remaned Glasgow Rocks) basketball team will be based here from 2012(?) under their sponsorship from Culture and Sport Glasgow. And, I would take a guess at the Glasgow Wildcats Netball team also under the Sponsorship od CUlture and Sport Glasgow.

Here's two pics showing the interior of the national sports arena. There are 4 sports halls in addition to the main arena. I read that the athletics track is built on a hydraulic floor and so can lift and lower and so clear the space to accommodate other sports.
