Just noticed yesterday on the Loop 202 SanTan Freeway, new logo signs were installed this week. The exits I saw them on include Price Road, Alma School Road, and Arizona Avenue.

In Spain, some traffic signs aren't standardised, so the (many) different road authorities have their own style, not only for "normal" traffic signs, but also for directional signage or road marking.

An example would be this: Two different signs for the same thing, the first one in my region (La Rioja) and the second in a neighbouring region (Navarre). I don't want to explain the meaning just to see if non-Spanish speakers are able to understand them

Another special sign from Castilla-La Mancha:

The sign in the middle photo is all over Navarra, they also have a Basque variant.

i must admit that this one that is obviously substandard with longer text is more understandable to me (but that's because i understand what it's written). senalizacion orientativa doesn't mean much to me.

The directional signs in Poland are green - with an exception for motorways (not expressways, motorways only), where they are blue.

Some examples:

- typical directional sign to a village, directing on a country road:

It shows the distance in km to the village.

- typical sign on a country road, on its intersection with a more important one:

A sign on the more important road can also look like this:

Today, I have found this one on Street View - it has definitely already seen its better days:

In a centre of a town the road crosses, the signage may look so:

On a national road, the signage will usually look better (it's an intersection with a country road):

- a roundabout sign:

And directly on the roundabout:

The directions to motorways on the signs on normal roads are always in frames with blue background:

By the way, we have an unusual situation - the roundabout sign had to be placed above the road because of noise barriers.

On big streets in cities, you will also usually see signage above the road:

Sometimes complemented with signs showing the directions to the city centre, airport and similar objects, which are in blue font on white background:

By the way, you can also see here the detour signage - with yellow background.

As you can see, the quality of the directional signage in the cities is usually not very good. And it often lacks consequence in the cities the signs direct to. It is because the signage in the cities is managed by the specific city and the signage on national roads outside of cities is managed by a governmental institution.

On motorways, you can meet two versions of directional signage.

The official signage looks as follows:

- for exits:

3 km ahead - a sign with the name of the exit:

1.5 km ahead - a sign with the directions:

500 m ahead - repeated sign with the directions (here elevated because of the noise barrier):

A directional sign above the road just before the exit:

- for interchanges - it's more or less the same.

Here, the first sign with directions and the sign with the interchange name appear only 1 km before the interchange - because of the small distance from the last exit:

It's anyway repeated 500 m before:

Exit on an interchange (onto another motorway):

There is also a confirming sign just at the exit:

Another example, for a Y-shaped interchange:

After an exit or interchange, you have a sign with distances to the next cities:

Such signs are also on normal national roads:

Sometimes also on regional roads, although I cannot find any example just now.

On newly built sections of motorways, there is usually an experimental signage.

From the movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKtaG_K1rOo

There exits are now numbered:

The first directional signs before the exit are almost the same as before (with the number added):

But there is also a new version of the sign above the road just before the exit. Now, the lanes are clearly marked:

And yes, you can see a cyclist here. Who shouldn't be there.

That's, I think, all about the modern directional signage in Poland. But the signs weren't always be green (and blue) and they have not always had this font (used only in Poland). Even though, looking at one of the photos above, one may think they must have had a long history

In the past, they were yellow with black letters. The font was different and capital letters were used.

According to this post: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...postcount=1182
the green signs were introduced by a ministerial resolution from 1974. The deadlines for introducing them were:
- 30.06.1977 for European roads (marked by E and T letters with numbers - they had different numbers than now and the old numbers are still used by the Scandinavian countries)
- 30.06.1979 for the roads with two-digit numbers
- 30.06.1981 for the other roads

From the next post in that thread - such a sign could still be found in one place in Poland in 2014:

Here a photo with still the old yellow background but the modern font:

The modern A4 motorway in 1989:

The main directional sign has the new font (kind of, it was painted manually in those times, so nothing was identical), but the small sign with distances to the towns - still the old one:

End of 1960/beginning of 1970:

1991, a parking lot and information about its management:

Such an information is not a common thing now, but... exactly in this place there is still such an information, on a new board and updated: https://goo.gl/maps/J8DgZWtWLot

There is a website about the history of road signs in Poland: http://www.znaki-drogowe.pl - I will try to extract some photos of directional signage from it.

1926:

"Detour to the left"

1938:

1939 - German were installing their own signs in the occupied Poland as soon as possible:

(doesn't look so German - probably it's still Polish)

1943 - still German occupation - in its "best" (best for Germans) times:

1955:

1956:

1959 - detour sign:

1980:

While we talk about Andorra, we should spend some words on its border crossing road sign, which is the classic EU border sign. Except that Andorra is not part of the EU...
