Philadelphia- USA's first planned city/oldest big city

Philadelphia Population 1.5 M.(6th largest USA) Metro population 5.8M. 140 kilometers south of NYC. 200 km north of Washington DC.All of these photos are taken in the center portion of Philadelphia(Center City).

The first 4 photos are not mine but gives you a little flavor about the region and center of town.

Very beautiful.

This city is only 140m from NY?

If so, this area is almost like an American version of the fabled Blue Banana, the largest metro area in Europe and one of the world's most dense.

I believe NYC and Philadelphia are 89 M/140KM from center to center but Ive heard as close as 68 M from Staten island to NE Philly city limits. The NYC-Philly megalopolis is 30 M people , the 2nd densest industrialized corridor in the world after Tokyo/Kobe or so Ive been told.

What is the Blue Banana?

The Blue Banana refers to the European metro area. It runs from England to Italy and covers about 2,000 km. Since Europe is so dense, the entire continent is like what the US defines as a metro area. Milan is like a suburb of London. Since civilization has existed in European cities for about 10,000 years, it's not surprising that it's so dense.

A completely under rated city. If it wasnt squeezed between NY and Washington it would be much better known. I love it.

This is the Macy's department store in downtown. The first photo posted by the OP I believe I've seen it on www.phillyskyline.com.

And Philly is a great place! The best part is its location. 2 hour train ride north to NYC, or 2 hour train ride south to D.C.! Or overnight train ride west to Chicago! Close to beaches in New Jersey, easy to get around without a car, history, great food, 8 hours from Europe, love my city!

I loved Philly so much; but it's a city of great contrasts. The vibrancy of Centre City is a sharp contrast from the "dead zones" encircling it (ie, Kensington) and that issue across the river known as Camden.

Philadelphia's skyline is amazing. Its truly one of the best in the world, but it rarely gets any props on this site. I'm looking forward to the American Commerce Center.

Philadelphia is not the oldest big city of America. Both New York and Boston are much older. But it was the largest city of the United States in the late 1700's until New-York overtook it (again).

Nice pictures. I should visit it again

I agree ...especially here in Europe it is completely overshadowed by Boston, which in my very humble opinion can't hold a candle to Philly.

love the density and architecture. love the street life and the energy.
have to say I like the Liberty place which doesnt resemble the Chrysler building. It is well proportioned imo.
