Boeing sees opportunity in Thai Airways plan
THE NATION Published on November 25, 2009 US aerospace giant Boeing expects to benefit from Thai Airways International's plan to upgrade its fleet.Boeing Commercial Airplanes marketing vice president Randy Tinseth said that during discussions with THAI recently, the airline showed interest in acquiring Boeing 777 cargo aircraft. The Boeing 777 cargo version is considered the most cost-efficient. Air France already uses it, said Tinseth, who was attending a seminar in Bangkok yesterday. He said Boeing foresaw long-term growth for the aviation industry in Southeast Asia and forecast a turnaround for Thailand's economy next year. "We have already reached the bottom of the economic recession, and we expect 2010 to be the year of economic recovery and 2011 for the airline industry," Tinseth said, adding that demand for new aircraft should begin in 2012. During the inauguration of two new Airbuses yesterday, THAI president Piyasvasti Amranand also expected the airline's load factor to average 75 per cent in the fourth quarter, thanks to the strengthening economic recovery and more stable oil prices. People's appetite for travel should begin to recover if the political situation remains calm, he said. Early next year, THAI will receive five more Airbus A330s, which will increase the airline's A330 fleet to eight. It now has 90 aircraft: 47 Boeings, 42 Airbuses and 1 ATR. Piyasvasti stressed THAI saw no need to open new routes next year, because its business strategy would focus on increasing flight frequencies on busy routes, such as to Singapore. Tinseth forecast airlines around the world would need 29,000 new aircraft worth US$3.2 trillion (Bt106 trillion) through 2028. Older, less-efficient aircraft will be replaced with efficient, newer-generation models. Boeing's order backlog as of the third quarter was for 3,400 aircraft worth a combined $254 billion. Air-traffic growth in Southeast Asia is expected to outpace economic growth, he said. Passenger growth over the next 20 years is expected to be above 6.5 per cent, while the region's economy is projected to grow at 4.6 per cent. In the Asia-Pacific, long-term annual air-traffic growth is projected to be 6.9 per cent over the next two decades, Tinseth said. Overall air-travel volume in the Asia-Pacific is growing rapidly and forecast to account for 41 per cent of all modes of transport in 20 years, up from 32 per cent now. Thailand's gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to contract 3 per cent this year and grow 5 per cent next year before settling into a long-term trend of 4.5 per cent annual growth. The contribution of travel and tourism to Thailand's GDP is expected to rise from 14.7 per cent this year to 15.6 per cent by 2019. "In the long term, airlines will continue to invest in more efficient, environmentally friendly aircraft that also serve the needs of passengers," Tinseth said. Boeing's manufacturing strategy is to deliver the right size of aircraft with the right capacity at the right time, Tinseth said. But he admitted the company's superjumbo Boeing 787-8 would not be in service until late next year, behind the Airbus A380, which is already being operated by a number of airlines. |

ahhh thai airways.. whats happened to you?
Thai Airways' Excess Baggage Charge Costs More Than Seat Time.com * By REED TUCKER Reed Tucker – Wed Nov 25, 9:25 am ET We all know that flying with bags these days can cost you extra, but who knew how expensive it could get? One unlucky traveler got hit with an excess-baggage charge so outrageous, he may as well have bought his luggage its own seats on the flight. Offending Party: Thai Airways What's at Stake: Hold onto your wallets, people: an overweight-bag charge of $2,200! The Complaint: Bob Wolfe and his wife were flying from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport to Panama. At the counter, Wolfe was told that his four bags were each about 2 kg or 3 kg over the 32 kg limit, and that he'd have to pay a penalty. (See 50 essential travel tips.) Wolfe was sent to a Thai Airways office where he says a number of employees discussed how much he should be charged for the bags. They argued with each other. They made phone calls. They looked generally confused, he says. More than an hour later, a verdict was rendered: Wolfe owed 66,000 Thai baht, or approximately $2,200. Anxious to catch his plane, Wolfe reluctantly coughed up the penalty, vowing to take up the case when he returned home. After exchanging numerous letters and e-mails with representatives of the airline, Wolfe is still unsure why he was charged so much, or how the confused employees arrived at the 66,000 baht figure. He says he has tried in vain to get an explanation or a partial refund on the bag charge. (Read "Sky-High Fees for Overweight Bags.") The Outcome: Just for fun, the Avenger looked up where a person could fly for $2,200 from his home base in New York City - with or without bags. Hey, look! Auckland, New Zealand! Jakarta, Indonesia! Beijing, China - twice! The Avenger contacted Thai Airways, and a rep provided the same letter that had been sent to Wolfe. It read, in part, "Any bag or piece which exceeds 32 kilos shall be charged at three times the applicable excess-baggage" charge of 5,500 baht. Huh? There was no explanation of why Wolfe's bags were charged "three times" the regular excess-baggage penalty. Were they three times as heavy? Three times as ugly? After a few weeks, the airline finally provided its overweight-baggage policy in writing. The explanation was that Wolfe was charged three times the normal fee because his bags were overweight and oversize. The policy, while confusingly written, seems to say that bags over 32 kg with total dimensions of more than 80 in. would get socked with a triple penalty. Fine, except that Wolfe insists no Thai Airways employee ever measured his bags. So the Avenger had Wolfe do it, then sent photographs to the airline of the bags next to a tape measure. The first two bags each totaled 60 in., while the second two totaled 67 in. each. All four were under the 80-in. limit, and should therefore have not been charged the triple penalty. The Avenger first contacted Thai Airways in August. It's now November, and the airline is still asking for more time to sort this out. Meanwhile, Wolfe remains confused as to exactly what he should have been charged. If there's a lesson here, it's this: If an airline is going to hit you with an overweight-bag fee, ask to see its policy in writing and make sure airline representatives measure and weigh your bags in front of you. Oh, and if you're traveling to Thailand, pack light. |

Oh well. Great publicity once again ofcourse for both Thai Airways and Thailand. Thai Airways should issue a press release and/or a public explanation for this case immediately! I always find the excess luggage charges to be very dodgy. Most of the time if you are NOT flying with a low cost airlines, a smile and a friendly talk would do if its less than 3kg over.

THAI boss seeks anti-AirAsia alliance
Bangkokpost Published: 28/11/2009 at 12:00 AM Piyasvasti calls for unity on foreign threat Thai Airways International (THAI)'s chief executive says Thai-owned carriers should form a united front against foreign rivals, especially the fledging budget carrier AirAsia, whose rapid expansion is seen as a "threat". "Instead of fighting among ourselves, it would be better for us, Thai airlines, to stick together, co-operate and fight AirAsia, which is the biggest threat," said Piyasvasti Amranand. "They [AirAsia] are expanding rapidly, taking a lot of passengers away. Their Thai market share has been increasing rapidly." In his sixth week as president of the flag carrier, the former energy minister said he was advocating "much closer co-operation" among Thai airlines such as privately owned Bangkok Airways. The co-operation could take several forms, including a code-share agreement, feeding passengers between airlines, consolidating networks and avoiding "unnecessary" competition, he said. But Dr Piyasvasti's view, that AirAsia is a common threat to Thai airlines, surprised Tassapon Bijleveld, chief executive of Thai AirAsia, the sister carrier of Southeast Asia's largest low-cost carrier group based in Malaysia. "Why are they seeing us in that light? They should see us complementing them, by bringing passengers from Asean into Thailand and feeding them to Thai airlines and THAI through its Bangkok hub," he told the Bangkok Post. Mr Tassapon added that AirAsia and THAI served different markets, with the former targeting budget-conscious travellers and the latter those seeking full services. "It is fair to say that THAI should be competing with legacy carriers such as Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Emirates, not us," he said. Mr Tassapon asked why entities with foreign ownership, like Thai AirAsia - which is 49% owned by Malaysia's AirAsia Bhd - face discrimination. "Do we believe in free trade and fair competition in this country?" AirAsia's extraordinary growth has raised considerable concern among airlines, at least in Southeast Asia. Marketed under the slogan "Now Everyone can Fly", AirAsia has now flown more than 75 million passengers and is linking cities across Asia-Pacific. In just seven years, the airline has grown from a fleet of two aircraft with one destination and a staff of 250 to a fleet of more than 80 aircraft with 113 routes to almost 60 destinations across Asia-Pacific and a staff of 6,500. The airline's low-cost long-haul affiliate, known as AirAsia X, also flies from its Kuala Lumpur hub to Australia, northern China, Taiwan, the UK and, most recently, the United Arab Emirates. THAI, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year, has a fleet of 88 aircraft, which transports nearly 20 million passengers a year to 74 destinations, and employs 26,000 workers. Industry sources said Dr Piyasvasti brought the issue of co-operation among Thai airlines to the public following a recent meeting with Bangkok Airways president Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth, in which co-operation between the two carriers was discussed, without concrete agreement on the matter being reached. |

THAI targets Bt32 bn EBITDA in 2010
By The Nation 2/12/2009 Thai Airways International targets a 20.7 per cent increase in revenue in 2010, with revenue target of Bt193 billion which should raise the earning before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) in the year to approximately Bt32 billion. The project is part of the 5-year strategic plan which was recently approved by the board of directors. Available seat kilometer (ASK) is set for a 10.7 per cent increase to 80,000 million for production, revenue passenger kilometre (RPK) is set at 59,000 million, a 13.2 per cent increase over 2009. Target average cabin factor for 2010 is 74 per cent along with a 11.4 percent increase in freight production (ADTK) and a 14 percent increase in freight revenue over 2009 to 4,400 million tonne kilometers (ADTK) and 2,200 million tonne kilometres (RFTK), respectively. THAI President Piyasvasti Amranand, the strategic plan implementation will commence immediately in 2010 and beyond to strengthen its internal operations and enhancing its competitiveness in 2011 . For 2012 and beyond, the solid operating and financial base will enable THAI to again grow and expand with sustainability towards achieving TG 100. The plan emphasises on the need to be highly customer oriented, higher value for customers, and dynamism. Focus is placed on achieving the highest level of customer satisfaction within 2 years with the plan to refurbish seats and entertainment systems within existing aircraft along with providing improved customer experience at every touchpoint from ticketing, ground services, inflight services until the customer leaves the airport. To achieve the above goal, the board approved the refurbishment of 12 Boeing 747 aircraft that are utilized primarily on flights to Europe that are high revenue-making routes. Refurbishment will take two years for completion for all 12 aircraft. In the meantime, other service enhancement strategies will need to be immediately put in place, such as improvement to inflight menus, ensuring service standard and consistency at all customer touchpoints. Meanwhile, the airline is offering Royal First Class service for the first time to Dubai in the Middle East, starting from December 1. Pruet Boobphakam, Executive Vice President, Commercial Department, said that Thai Airways International has always enjoyed loyal support from Arab and expatriate communities, where premium class travel in the Middle East has always been highly popular. The Middle East routes have had double-digit growth in the last few years. The Company views the Middle East as one of the most important markets in THAI's network, despite strong competition from Middle East based carriers. With the new Airbus 340-600, THAI is able to offer more seating in Royal Silk Class at a capacity of 60 seats and introduce eight Royal First Class seats. Royal First Class passengers are offered dedicated First Class check-in counter service at Suvarnabhumi and Dubai Airports, Royal First Class Lounge access at Suvarnabhumi Airport and Royal Orchid Spa Lounge, providing two private therapy suites and sauna, exercise and yoga spaces. Currently, THAI operates daily to Dubai, utilising Airbus A330 aircraft and will begin utilising the Airbus A340-600 on 1 December 2009, with a total seat capacity of 267: eight seats in Royal First Class, 60 seats in Royal Silk Class and 199 seats in Economy Class. This upgrade in seat capacity for First Class passengers is part of an overall THAI strategy targeting the growing Middle East market. THAI serves Dubai, Kuwait and Muscat with high load factors. THAI also takes pride in its Middle East credentials with a substantial Halal food catering division providing up to 4,000 meals a day on its own flights to Muslim countries such as Pakistan, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Brunei, India, Oman, Kuwait and the UAE.

Contract staff of THAI and Tags stage separate protests
By THE NATION Published on December 5, 2009 Outsource employees of Thai Airways International and Thai Airport Ground Services (Tags) yesterday staged separate protests at Suvarnabhumi Airport. About 50 contract staff of Thai Airways who sort luggage stopped work in response to |Airport of Thailand's revision of some working rules. One of the changes is that daytime employees are no longer allowed to wear uniforms with pockets, in order to prevent the theft of passengers' belongings. AOT had earlier asked night-shift staff to over the day employees' work. AOT chairman Piyaphan Champasut said the company would not withdraw the new rules. Narongsak Sangapong, THAI senior executive vice president, said the issue would not affect operations at the airport. All carriers are operating as normal. Outsource workers of Tags, which provides ground-handling services at Suvarnabhumi, protested over concerns they will lose their jobs as AOT will soon end a contract with the company.
