you don't get the point, its fiction

only insecure people take stuff like this seriously

we have a few like that in Australia ("woe is us, we are a cultured country - not a bunch out outback hicks wrestling crocodiles") but we are a middle power at best in the world, a small one more likely, so you expect it

you are Russian, do you really need hollywood kissing your ass and everyone saying how awesome you are to feel good about yourself?

you have a good history, a good culture, and a good WC bid, why worry about fiction??

AILD, I take it from your contributions to this forum you'd rather the world saw Russians as whiny and thin-skinned?

And again, what has all this to do with your world cup bid?

Mate if you keep up with the victim "us against them" mentality even the most reasonable of people stop listening. Sure "us against them" helps to build solidarity but it also works as a great distraction.

Russia has to stop being so sensitive. Do Americans really care about the immense number of stereotypes about them. Do Australian's and the Irish care that we're supposedly all drunks. Get over yourself, no one is out to get you. It is a nationalist ploy and doesn't do anyone any favours.

Continuing your little theories insults us and our intellegence as well. We are quite capable of making our own minds up about Russia and its people through an un ending number of sources. The Movies aren't the news. That is why I said that no one has a problem with Russians and people from all over the world already choose to vacation in Russia to enjoy it for themselves.

When it was during "Cold War", it was somehow justified (though very questionable).

But what they are doing now, during 20 years? They not only continued but increased this absurd. And this is already an unacceptable thing.

Shows that all previous "war" was not about ideology.

Russia's World Cup bid is a good opportunity to destroy this wall of absurd. That was repeated many times by Bid officials. So, this is on theme.

You do realise that Russians as "Bad Guys" are not the only "Bad Guys" in Hollywood films. Countless movies have "Bad Guys" from America's own Military, Government and Big business. If you really believedthat we all take it as gospel then wouldn't we all be deeply paranoid at the fragile corrupt nature of Amerca's own institutions.

for every one US film with a Russian bad guy, I can name 5 with yanks as the bad guys

and if you don't think the US pushes negative stereotypes of the US, get a look at My Name is Earl, COPS, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, The Osbournes, Roseanne, The Simpsons, South Park, Family Guy, Dog the Bounty Hunter, and so on - and unlike a movie these get played every week

The US spends much more time bagging itself than it does anyone else

Of course, it's normal situation if the people from one state have stereotypes about other nations. But if you ask ordinary Russians what associations they have concerning other nations that you get the following answers:
1) Italy - sun, football, pasta, pizza, love;
2) France - amour, champagne, Eiffel tower;
3) Spain - sun, corrida, football;
4) Australia - sun, desert, kangourou, rugby, aborigene;
5) UK - queen, double-deckers, football, island, rain....

As you can see, all these associations have humoristic character.

But what associations have West about Russia:
1) cold, vodka, bears, communism, corruption, Stalin, etc.

But what number of sourse? Only mass-media and movies. Of course, there are many "bad guys" in American films, but the main American characters are "good guys", while Russians always portrayed in negative sense.

Everything is very simple. I want that Hollywood must to use the principle of "political correctness" not only for US-citizens of various nationalities and races, but also for non-US citizens.

I have been to Russia many times and can confirm some of the stereotypes and can dismiss others. Same as most places in the world I guess.

One thing that always puzzles me is that their women all seem to fall into one of two categories - Slim, Blond & gorgeous - or fat and smell of cabbage - there doesnt seem to be any in the middle .....

MOSCOW/SOCHI, Sep 22: Africa’s four votes could be crucial in December when FIFA decides on which two of nine bids will win the crown jewels of hosting rights for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup.

A Russian bid delegation led by ceo Alexei Sorokin is Cairo-bound to present jointly and severally to members of the African confederation. However lobbying in the home continent of the last World Cup has become even more intriguing after the latest controversy over terrace racism.

Different countries meet the issue in different ways. This has been underlined following the Peter Odemwingie row. A group of fans of Lokomotiv Moscow unfurled an insulting banner on his last appearance before transferring to West Bromwich in the Premier League.

The ensuing media coverage, particularly in England – which is also bidding for 2018 - featured speculation that the incident could backfire in voting terms against Russia.

Sorokin has no illusions about the significance of the African votes. He said: “The African votes are important because this is the one region which does not have a bid nation representative on the FIFA executive. I think we know where Angel Villar (Spain), Michel D’Hooghe (Belgium) and Geoff Thompson (England) will vote - in the first round anyway.

But wait! Haven't we been told constantly by posters in the other threads that Qatar has already locked up all the African votes? This would imply some sort difference of opinion between that line of thinking.

Qatar isn't bidding for 2018. They may well be voting for Qatar in 2022 but undecided for 2018, who knows?

Qatar isn't bidding for '18 full stop
They are bidding for '22 but almost certainly won't be shortlisted after the Exco meeting in October

That meeting will be one of the biggest sports meetings of all time, the world cup maybe over for 2010 but for me this will be almost as good. Who will be knocked out? Who will withdraw? Who will support who? So many questions, awaiting answers, exciting stuff
