Global Stadium Rating System

What if there was some sort of global rating/star system for stadia around the world?

Which venues would be 5 star? or an Alpha Stadium?

I know UEFA's new regulations rate stadia, as 1, 2, 3 stars and Elite stadiums, in ascending ranking order http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Elite_stadium

Also, as Sercan has already posted, those are UEFA's regulations: http://www.uefa.com/newsfiles/551788.pdf

Would it be possible to develop a SkyscraperCity stadium rating system? If nothing else it would lead to some good debates.

Great idea, we could make poll threads, like best football stadiums, best athletic stadiums, and include 15 of the best stadiums in each category in the poll. Or we could start the threads without polls and start comparing.

True, everybody will just vote for their own. Or support.

Criteria for stadiums (not arenas)

Size
Location
View Lines
Usage
Atmosphere

All will be a 0 to 5 standard. 0 being lowest, 5 being highest. All 5 are added up and arranged in order of score.

EX: Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City USA

Size 4
Location 3
View Lines 4
Usage 4
Atmosphere 5

Final Score: 20 out of 25

Ex: Birds Nest in Beijing China

Size 5
Location 4
View Lines 4
Usage 1
Atmosphere 1

Final Score: 15 out of 25

Ex: Cowboys Stadium in Arlington Texas USA

Size 5
Location 4
View Lines 0 (unknown)
Usage 5
Atmosphere 0 (unknown)

Final Score: 14 out of 25 (will be reviewed after first year)

Then we put them in Classes:
Class 1 : (Elite) 21 - 25
Class 2 : 16 - 20 (Arrowhead)
Class 3 : 11 - 15 (Birds Nest, Cowboys Stadium in Arlington)
Class 4 : 6 to 10
Class 5 : (poor) 0 to 5

Small stadiums can make up for low score with great sight lines and great atmosphere while the largest might not always have the best atmosphere. those located inside a city might not always be better then those in the suburbs and vise versa.

Then each of the 5 criteria could be broken down into individual rules and standards. atmosphere would be the hardest to grade.

nice idea, but how do you work out how to give those values, surely there should eb parameters there.

Like for instance size, maybe

+30,000 = 2
+40.000= 3

or something along those lines, then it is less subjective, and more objective.

Obviously things like atmosphere would be jard to ojectively judge but there must be a way...

There has to be other criteria as well, like roofing, pitch surface, luxury amenities, and aesthetics for example.

I think the best way to collect data for subjective points like aesthetics and atmosphere would be to dedicate a thread to judging a stadium, and having everyone post there ratings. After a month close the thread and average out the data.

you would need more subjective rating then objective. Atmosphere and View Lines are the objective. Size is Subjective and will have set standards.

Size:
75,000 - 100,00+ = 5
50,000 - 74,999 = 4
35,000 - 49,999 = 3
20,000 - 34,999 = 2
10,000 - 19,999 = 1
1 - 9,999 = 0

subjective is personal opinions, and thats what categories like atmosphere would be based on. We just need a large enough sample to rule out bias.

i think you have subjectivity and objectivity mixed up dude.

"In philosophy, an objective fact means a truth that remains true everywhere, independently of human thought or feelings. For instance, it is true always and everywhere that 'in base 10, 2 plus 2 equals 4'. A subjective fact is one that is only true under certain conditions, at certain times, in certain places or for certain people."

If you mark it out of 10, it allows for more variation...

Size (Set Number for size value)
Location (Distance from large Metropolis, parking, road access, Public transportation access)
View Lines (Fan opinion)
Usage (Scheduling future and past)
Atmosphere (Fan Opinion)
Elements (how does the stadium adapt to changing climates and weather; roof, warm region, semi covered fan area, retractable roof)
Movement (how easy is it to get to the bathrooms, vending, exits, are there enough of all those to be convenient)
Luxury (How many suites, size of suites, locations of suites and use of club level seating)
Surface (Real v Fake and maintenance of real and playing speed of fake)
Icon (Is the stadium a symbol or just another stop on the schedule)
History (Years built, mega events hosted)
