The Gas Authority of India Limited plans to lay a 7,200 KM long LPG pipeline to ensure cheaper and uninterrupted gas supply in major South Indian cities by 2012, GAIL Executive Director, Mr J Vasan, said here on Monday.

"GAIL is planning to lay special caste iron pipeline along the National Highway to connect Kochi, Kozhikode, Mahe and Mangalore and to Bangalore via Erode, Salem," he said at a function to inaugurate works of a gas pumping station here as part of the Rs 3,000 crore project.

The GAIL would increase the specially designed pipeline to 14,000 KM as part of providing uninterrupted gas supply to households, vehicles and industrial units in select towns in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, he said.

The pipelines would be laid in deep pits by adhering to all sefety stipulations and gas supply to households would be manned by computers, he said.

Speaking at the function after receiving papers from the GAIL official, Puducherry Chief Minister, Mr V Vaithilingam, said Mahe would soon turn into a "smokeless" town in the State. Mahe, in Kerala, is an enclave of the union territory of Puducherry. - PTI

Welcome move: The burden on the existing bus terminal will reduce if the Erode Corporation’s proposal to build a new bus terminal near Karur Road comes through.

ERODE: Signs of Erode transforming in to a big city are emerging and perhaps the first of that is a new bus terminal.

The textile city, recently upgraded to a municipal corporation, may soon get the terminal, if the Erode Municipal Corporation has its way.
Land

Sources in the civic body say it has asked the Government to direct the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board to return its land in Lakkapuram.

The Corporation gave a little over 51 acres to the Board to set up an effluent treatment plant to treat Perumpallam Odai water, which drained in River Cauvery.

The Board set up the plant with Union Government funding under the National River Action Plan but could not run it for long because of opposition from people of the area.

Its efforts to even repair the plant and address the percolation issue met with stiff resistance.

Sources say they pointed out this to the Government and also the fact that the treatment plant has not been running for the past five years to retrieve the land, which will be used to build a new terminal.

The plan is to build a terminal, including bus depot, on the land to accommodate buses from the south.

The sources say buses from Tirunelveli, Madurai, Oddanchatram, Pallapatti, Dindigul, Theni, Karur and others areas can be made to stop there.

This, they point out, will reduce the burden on the existing bus stand in the heart of the city and also reduce vehicular movement.

The Corporation has estimated that more than 1,000 buses enter the city and a good percentage of it is from the aforementioned areas.

To back its plan, the Corporation has also cited the Traffic Operation Management Plan, prepared by Pallavan Consultancy Service of the erstwhile Pallavan Transport Corporation.

Prepared about 10 years ago, the report suggests construction of a bus terminal near Karur Road, subways, foot-over bridges and widening of four or five important junctions.

And the Corporations move to set up a new terminal has found support.

Erode District Small Industries Associations president R. Mylsami says setting up of a new bus stand will help in the city’s expansion and lead to economic development of the area.

Better build an integrated mega bus stand on NH 47 near Chitode, so that the present bus stand will stay as city bus stand.

And buses for Karur, Nellai, Madurai, Trichy side can very well take the rings roads to reach the integrated bus stand.

Chitode will be useful for Bhavani and easy approach for Coimbatore, Salem, Tiruppur, Sathy and Gobi buses too.

exactly, erode should not follow the way of building bus terminals in each road. Go for an integrated bus stand at a shot.

Chittode is not a correct place to build a bus stand as it will receive Salem coimbatore buses and there will be crisis among the different bus operators.

ERODE: The VOC Park in the city will soon sport a new look, as the Erode Corporation has taken up works to give it a complete facelift.

The improvements include new and expanded lawns, planting beds, new artificial fountains, repaved paths, new benches, lighting, and more.

Facilities


New amenities and a play area for children will also be established.

The Corporation has allotted about Rs. 55 lakh to carry out these improvements at the park which had remained in a state of neglect for the past several months.

A few years ago, the authorities had dismantled a mini zoo located inside the park premises. A large portion of the park had remained unutilised since.

The growth of wild plants on the land spoiled the park’s landscape.

Citizens and various organisations had made repeated appeals to the civic authorities to improve the surroundings and facilities in the park.

The Corporation had taken up a portion of the land in the park for improvement.

Other works


Corporation Commissioner B. Balachandran said that more development works would be carried out in the park in a phased manner.

The civic body had planned to seek more funds from the government for carrying out the improvements.

Mr. Balachandran said that the civic body would rope in private organisations for the maintenance and operation of the park.

Proposals sent to develop six places as tourist spots

The district administration has sent proposals to the State Tourism Department to develop six places as tourist spots. District Collector R. Sudalaikannan told The Hindu that the administration had suggested development of Kulavilakku Amman Temple in Nanjai Kalamangalam Temple, near Erode, place where the annual horse fair takes place near Anthiyur, Erode V.O.C. Park, Gunderipallam Dam in Gobichettipalayam taluk, Kalingarayan Dam near Bhavani, Perumpallam Dam in Sathyamangalam taluk and River Bhavani banks in Sathyamangalam.

2010 Railway budget:

I read some news that corporation limit for Erode, Tirupur, Vellore is going to be extended. Not sure whether pallipalayam will be added to Erode. Let's wait and watch..

I think Erode will be the fifth largest corp in TN , if it is integrated with vpctrm, srmpti, ksiplm, periyasmr, BPAgrm, Thindal & Palliplm. Right????

After completion of present tenure of municipalities and town panchayats ie in 2011, all these places will be merged with Erode corporation.

Yes, Pallipalayam even though in Namakkal dt, should be merged with Erode corporation as it is now part and parcel of Erode town. But as on date there is no such proposal.

Even Tiruchengode and Komarapalayam should be merged with Erode district as it will be easier for the people from these places to go to Erode for govt reated works instead of Namakkal

2 panchayats ( Suriyam palayam & BP Agraharam) and

ya.... the towns around Erode wil be soon merged together... like perundurai(18km), bhavani(12), sankagiri(21), chithode(7), tiruchengode(18) are just 1/2 an hour travel from here.

But as of, upto now sankari and tiruchengode are in salem n nmkl dists(but they are more than an hour trvel from their dist hdqrtrs, nearly 35-40kms)....

Regarding city bus upgradation, I see that only big cities like CBE, MDU are upgraded and not all corporation.
