I wonder if Fox News will blame Chicago's loss on some giant left wing conspiracy against the US.

Why not demolish Maracanã and replace it with a new combined World Cup / Olympic stadium?

Maracana should stay as it is after it has been completely renovated for the 2014 World Cup.

Congratulations to Rio de Janeiro and to Brazil. The WC-2014 and the OS-2016 will give this country (and hopefully the whole continent of South America) a gigantic boost in all levels of society. Let's hope they can capitalize on these events to fight poverty and crime and increase the level of education and wealth. It would be very, very good for the whole region.

Rio de Janeiro is the best choice by far. Also their bid is very impressive.

Is this the fist time an opening ceremonies will not take place in the track stadium? I think that could be potentially provides a positive first trend given that many cities have large stadiums but have no use to build large limited use track stadiums.

I hope so... I mean, athletics will always be the soul of the OG, but to build 90k stadiums for that single purpose is very unefficient, specially in Rio's case, where we already have a legendary high-capacity venue next door.

I don't see the problem about it really, at leats in the logistics apects, it shouldn't be so hard to transport the torch from one place to another, or to make a "second" lightning ceremony for that matter. But I guess the tradition is imposing enough...

But I guess the city probably cheated to win the 2016 Games.

If Rio is going to make a perfect Summer Olympic host city, they're going to have to make some alterations to their plan. First, there need to be bigger construction projects in the city. Second, all of the favelas in the city need to be redeveloped, though it is an impossible job because many of the favelas are on hillsides and the redevelopments will have to be done in phases. Third, regulations allow only one main stadium, so make like Barcelona and Mexico City and just hold the ceremonies in the Joao Havelange Olympic Stadium, which will hold 60000, I don't care how small it is, 60K is the minimum requirementfor a main Olympic Stadium, so we need an undisputed main stadium at the minimum required capacity. Fourth, I saw on Wikipedia that the Rio Metro will have several new lines constructed in the future and I hope that at least some of them will be done before the 2016 Games so that transportation will not be much of a big problem. Fifth, you may need to make several other alterations to your already bad-looking venue plan.
Thanks for your trolling, please come back... NOT!!!!!!!!!!!

In the subway sector, I hope we can implement the lines 4 and 6, which in my opinion, would be of extreme importance to ensure a quality mass transportation system to the city!

Line 3 is already under development and the workings should start early 2010.

The finner black lines are suburban railways to be modernized into metro-quality service.

Marvellous Rio Brazilian city to host 2016 Olympics
Saturday October 3, 2009

COPENHAGEN: Rio de Janeiro was named host of the 2016 Olympic Games yesterday as red-hot favourite Chicago, backed by US President Barack Obama, was handed a devastating, heart-breaking snub.

Rio will be the first South American city to stage the Olympics after seeing off Madrid in the final round of voting which followed a tense and passionate final day of lobbying of International Olympic Committee (IOC) members.

“It’s unbelievable, overwhelming, spectacular,” beamed Rio Governor Sergio Cabral after Rio won the final round of voting by 66-32.

Chicago was sensationally eliminated in the first round, quickly followed by Tokyo, the only city of the four to have previously hosted the Games, in the second stage.

Chicago’s defeat came despite the intervention of Obama who had flown in yesterday morning to appear at the city’s final presentation.

But even his powerful presence, as well as the lobbying of his wife Michelle, failed to sway the members.

“We fought a good fight and I am very proud of the team and the campaign,” said Chicago bid chief Pat Ryan. “Some you win, some you lose. That’s the way it goes.

“I would like to congratulate the two finalists. I have no idea why we went out so early. The IOC members will have to ask themselves that question.”

In Rio, tens of thousands of people partied on the iconic beach at Copacabana when IOC president Jacques Rogge revealed the winner.

Brazil football legend Pele was in tears when Rio was announced as the winner.

“I’m a very emotional guy and I have been crying ever since I heard the result. This is a great moment not only for Brazil but for South America. In terms of how it compares to a World Cup this is like another goal,” he said.

The Tokyo bid team were said to be shocked and stunned as they felt their message on improving the environment and placing the accent on youth would play well.

Even an impressive turn by newly-elected Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama failed to convince members.

Rio’s appearance in the final two was no surprise as they had consistently impressed in the past year and a stunning piece of oratory by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva at the presentation sealed their place.

Madrid, bidding to become the first Spanish city to host the Olympics since Barcelona’s successful 1992 edition, were seen to be rank outsiders and were as much as 16-1 with British bookmakers Ladbrokes earlier in the week.

However, the presence of 89-year-old former IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch helped secure vital votes.

Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero told Reuters: “Rio was a great candidate. We put up a great fight.” — AFP/Reuters

First round: Madrid 28, Rio de Janeiro 26, Tokyo 22, Chicago 18 (Chicago eliminated).

Second round: Rio 46, Madrid 29, Tokyo 20 (Tokyo eliminated).

Final round: Rio 66, Madrid 32.

What are they planning to do for the athletes walk in/nation introduction? Are they going to have a fake track of some sort? Or an oval red carpet?
