[PE] Peru | road infrastructure • Carreteras del Perú

Couldn't find a threat for Peru, so here goes (if there is one, apologies). Some pictures from our drive from Lima to Juliaca via routes 1S (which is part of the Panamericana) and 30. The route is motorway from downtown Lima until some 110 kms South at the town of Cañete. An extension further South is underway. From there on, the route is 1+1; more isn't needed anyway.

Full-size pictures and locations at Panoramio.

Lima - Camaná

Arequipa - Juliaca (Ruta 30)

Nice pictures, Pino. I added the thread to the index.

I thought interchanges are called an "intercambio" in Peru, can you confirm this?

WOW!

It looked much more glorious than I expected. Seems like Peru is really gearing up for a society that will be more harmonious, with several big infrastructure plans in the pipeline

@Chris, I haven't seen a proper interchange, so I can't confirm. Doubt whether you will find something like a proper cloverleaf in Lima or elsewhere in the country. And to the extent that there is a proper interchange, I doubt whether it would be signposted as anything else than a normal "salida".

@SqueezeDog, these pictures are from the most important roads in the country. Expect much less glorious once you leave these carreteras. The most important road construction projects of Peru are the improvement of those most important roads to the extent that they have not been upgraded yet: the eastern connectors to Brazil (Rutas 26 and 30, Intercambio Interoceanico), and Ruta 3 through the Andes and close to the Bolivian border. The area that really could use a big update is metropolitan Lima. The city has grown rapidly since the late 1980s, but its road infra has not kept the pace. The pictures shown in this thread were taken on a Sunday morning. Expect chaos at any other time. As far as I know, road construction projects in Lima itself are very much limited though.

Lima isn't Los Angeles or even Caracas, but there are some proper interchanges. Some photos from this fine SSC thread:

INTERCAMBIO VIAL DE JAVIER PRADO, Google map link. Note the bus stops and elaborate pedestrian ramps.

A bit west of there along Avenida Javier Prada Este...

...brings us to this interchange with the Paseo De La Republica...

a '70's vintage freeway with a separate busway in the median...

...which is being upgraded to a proper bus rapid transit line.

A pair of flyovers is planned for that interchange, too.

There's other interesting stuff, too, especially this 3.5km four lane bus freeway along Avenida Grau...

...which will terminate at an enormous underground bus station.

Uh oh-- that's transit! But there's lots of cool roads, too, like the proposed Autopista de Dunkin' Donuts:

By all means have a look at the thread. Any roadgeek will find it worth his time.

The bus i was traveling in had mechanical problems and couldn't continue its drive and left us 1 hour away from Lima, the bus company offered me to wait 3 hours for another bus! So i took a cab instead.

This gave me a little time to take a picture of the Panamericana highway entering Lima.

yep, that's the bus.

There's a facinating new project that's about to start in Lima: the Yellow Line Expressway. It's a kind of semi-bypass of the city's historic core for the PanAmerican Highway, though it also incorporates a connection toward Callao, the region's port, and toward the airport. Its central feature is a 2km 2x3 tunnel under and parallel to the Rimac River, similar to the Costanera Norte in Santiago. There will also be a COSAC (busway using special high-floor, natural gas-fueled vehicles) 16km long with 32 stations built along the existing highway and apparently in other loctions throughtout the project.

I say 'apparently' because it's hard to find maps of the project that are both believable and readable-- I've spent more time that I should admit on this thread in the Peruvian forums trying to figure out exactly what's proposed. The best representation of the project I've seen so far is this video:

Here's a not-very-believable map of the central section, with the tunnel shown in yellow. IMO, there's no way this thing will cost only the $570m claimed-- I'd guess at least twice that:

and another showing the full project, including the busway. "Propuesta Brasiliena" refers to the fact that this project was proposed by and is to be designed, built and operated by a Brazillian firm and paid for by tolls:

Here's one of the tunnel itself:

and finally one of mass transit in Lima in the near future. The yellow lines are apparently the lesser COSAC's, the red is the mostly-grade-separated Metropolitano busway, and the blue is the infamous Lima Metro, finally being extended into the region's core after decades of delay.
