Dubai Maritime City’s “Maritime Centre” Showcased at Seatrade Middle East Maritime 2008

Dubai Maritime City’s global maritime capital to be new corporate destination

December 14th, 2008
Dubai Maritime City, the world’s first purpose-built maritime centre and a member of the Dubai World Group of companies, showcased its Maritime Centre during Seatrade Middle East 2008, currently being held at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre from December 14-16. The show – the Middle East’s biggest maritime industry event – was the ideal platform to promote the Maritime Centre, which is considered the focal point of Dubai Maritime City.

The Maritime Centre, the heart of the Dubai Maritime City, comprises a cluster of five high-rise towers called the Creek Towers and Plaza; Landmark Tower located at the head of the man-made peninsula; and seven plots reserved for potential developers planning to construct their own towers. The Centre will also feature a 5-star business hotel and premium service apartments, thus emerging as the first exclusive maritime cluster in the world.

“A study by renowned consulting firm DNV Maritime Solutions revealed that Dubai is set to emerge as one of the world’s most competitive maritime clusters. The Maritime City has been singled out as one of the important elements that will help mould Dubai into a maritime powerhouse within the next few years, and the Maritime Centre forms the core of this visionary development,” said Amer Ali, CEO, Dubai Maritime City.

Located at the tip of the 227-hectare man-made peninsula, the Maritime Centre is the focal point of Dubai Maritime City, serving as the universal capital for all maritime businesses. Designed as an urban corporate park, the Centre offers the choicest business amenities; it incorporates a series of multilevel facilities aimed at diverse functions and purposes such as state-of-the-art international maritime conference facilities, retail outlets consisting of shops and restaurants, with walkways and promenades, attractive landscaping, and recreational areas.

Currently in its third and final phase of development, Dubai Maritime City comprises a community encompassed within a unique maritime-themed lifestyle and divided into six clusters: The Marina District; Industrial Precinct; Dubai Maritime City Campus; The Maritime Centre; Harbour Offices; and Harbour Residences. The project’s ‘green building’ policies, whereby all developers are required to obtain green building certification to ensure energy conservation and optimised living conditions, make it the first maritime centre to implement such strict environmental compliance and long-term sustainability initiatives.

“There is nothing quite like Dubai Maritime City in terms of size, and even environmental compatibility. Every conceivable issue that may affect the project has been thoroughly scrutinised and addressed. We have also maintained a high level of flexibility to be able to accommodate future trends and requirements as this has been one of the important aspects that ensure Dubai Maritime City’s long-term sustainability,” concluded Ali.

About Dubai Maritime City:

Dubai Maritime City is a 227 hectare fully-equipped, iconic and multidimensional maritime centre providing a world-class infrastructure and environment for the global maritime industry and related sectors. Dubai Maritime City is driven by the needs of both local and international marine and maritime communities for a dedicated hub.

Dubai Maritime City capitalizes on the strengths of Dubai as a regional and international hub for trade and commerce, redefining the global maritime industry. It will provide a strategic location for the maritime industry sectors across the full spectrum of maritime business - maritime management, maritime services, maritime retail and recreation, maritime education and research, ship repair and maintenance, yacht repair and maintenance.

When completed, Dubai Maritime City will be a vibrant mixed use development for the maritime industry, comprising industrial, commercial, residential and leisure facilities housed on a man-made peninsula between Port Rashid and Dubai Dry Docks. As a peninsula development, Dubai Maritime City harnesses the benefits of open sea access for the industrial community, yet creates a mesmerizing living and working environment with breathtaking sea views in a vibrant commercial hub. By offering world-class infrastructure, services and regulations, Dubai Maritime City will create a unique specialized environment that promotes the networking and integration of leading maritime companies in one destination.

Following the signing of an MOA with SMTC

Emirates International Maritime Academy to establish a world-class offshore safety training centre

December 15, 2008
Emirates International Maritime Academy (EIMA) has announced that it has recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Malaysia's Sribima Maritime Training Centre (SMTC Global) to establish a world-class offshore safety training centre that will be based within Dubai Maritime City Campus (DMC Campus). The new training facility is poised to strengthen the portfolio of services and maritime courses already offered by EIMA, which focuses on providing a suitable gateway for citizens and residents in the region to enter the maritime field.

Under the agreement, SMTC and EIMA will collaborate towards the establishment and operation of a maritime safety training centre that will underpin the socioeconomic programmes of the UAE and the region. The new facility will offer training in the fields of Emergency Response, Safety Skill and Safety Management and will be on top of the various marine-oriented academic programs already offered by EIMA.

"SMTC Global is a world-renowned organisation in the field of maritime training, particularly in conducting competency-based safety courses for the oil and gas industry. As such, Dubai Maritime City is confident that this partnership will complement our policy of providing high-quality services to all clients within the maritime complex. Moreover, this joint venture will act as a catalyst that will accelerate the growth of the much-needed manpower and skills in the maritime sector and subsequently reinforce Dubai's reputation as a world-class maritime centre," said Capt. Jaafar Sidin, Director of DMC Campus and EIMA.

Capt. Rudy Rijckaert, Chairman, SMTC Global commented: "Through our cooperation with EIMA we aim at introducing a world-class safety training facility within Dubai Maritime City that will cater to the specific requirements of the oil and gas sector. For over 20 years, SMTC has been providing specialised courses to maritime professionals from the US, Canada, Russia, UK, Japan, Italy, Thailand, Malaysia and many other countries. We will work with EIMA to reinforce the image of Dubai as the region’s hug for maritime safety training."

The Emergency Response Training covers a wide range of offshore emergency situations that are discussed in detail in specialised courses. The training includes personal survival techniques, first aid, and fire prevention and fire fighting, among others. The Safety Skill Training offers courses that promote safety skills in driving; rigging and slinging; crane and forklift operation; scaffolding; welding; assessment of substances hazardous to health; abrasive wheels; and HACCP – Code for Catering Personnel, among others. The courses under Safety Skill Training include hazard management; supervising safety; accident investigation; job safety analysis; and permit to work (Applicant and Management). Courses will be offered in different languages including English and Arabic and are set to commence in mid 2009.

EIMA was established by Dubai Maritime City Authority to provide marine-oriented academic programs and open opportunities for individuals to work in the maritime sector by offering certificates in engineering and other fields of maritime navigation. It will be based within DMC Campus, the region's first-of-its-kind maritime educational campus that will accommodate over 1,300 students and will host several world-renowned universities and institutes.

About SMTC Global group:

Dubai Maritime City unveils new eco-friendly facility for boat lift, cleaning and maintenance services

Palm Marine Yacht Services' Sealift2 delivers the fastest lift time for all types of motor and sail boats

December 16, 2008
Dubai Maritime City, the world’s first purpose-built maritime centre and part of the Dubai World Group of companies, has announced that boat owners can now avail of new services within the integrated maritime centre including boat lifts, hull cleaning, general below waterline maintenance such as anode replacement, and re-launches in less than one hour. The new range of services were unveiled after Palm Marine Yacht Services recently completed the installation and commissioning of Sealift2, a unique rolling deck, floating dry dock platform at Dubai Maritime City.

The Sealift2 platform joins Dubai Maritime City's wide array of maritime services and amenities and strengthens the integrated maritime centre's capacity to serve the rapidly growing maritime sector, which is poised to accommodate up to 55,000 new berths within the next few years, substantially impacting the demand for lift, clean and maintenance services. Owned and operated by Palm Marine Yacht Services, the Sealift2 platform will lift all types of boats – motor and sail – of up to 50 tonnes in less than five minutes.

One of the core strengths of Dubai Maritime City is the quality of services and value-added features that it offers. Dubai Maritime City predicts that the new facility will be well-received by the growing community of boat owners not just in Dubai but in the whole Gulf region.

Steve Butcher, Chief Operating Officer at Palm Marine Yacht Services commented: “We wanted to enter the marine services market with an eco-friendly platform but without the usual delays
associated with constructing the land-based infrastructure needed for conventional travel lifts. Sealift2 offered us that flexibility.”

The rolling deck design is an eco-friendly pneumatic dry dock that delivers the fastest lift times available in the industry and can lift boats up to 18 metres in length (17-meter waterline) with a maximum beam of 5.5 metres. It has been certified by Lloyds British Testing Limited to lift boats weighing up to 50 tonnes. Moreover, Sealift2 dock is an eco-friendly platform that collects all wash off and disposes of it strictly in accordance with local environmental laws, making it an important factor in maintaining Dubai's healthy marine environment.

Dubai Maritime City caters to all requirements of the global maritime through six expertly master planned precincts: Harbour Offices, Harbour Residences, Maritime Centre, Marina District, Industrial Quarter and Dubai Maritime City Campus. Aside from the world-class infrastructure facilities, Dubai Maritime City also offers investors and business organisations highly attractive economic incentives such as free-zone benefits, responsive government support, a tax-free business environment and an effective port structure.

Industrial Precinct of Dubai Maritime City Successfully Conducts

Load Test for World’s Largest Mobile Boat Hoist

Dubai – December 28, 2008: Dubai Maritime City witnessed another milestone yesterday after a successful load test was conducted for its BHT 700/16 mobile boat hoist. The hoist, which will be featured within Dubai Maritime City’s Industrial Precinct, comes at a cost of DHS 14 million. Built in Italy, the hoist weighs 300 tonnes and is capable of lifting 720-tonne boats. It is expected to complement Dubai Maritime City’s two ship lifts as it will concentrate on the handling of smaller crafts, particularly mega yachts. To be operated by Drydocks World – Dubai, only Italy and Spain operate the exact same model as the one featured in the UAE, which is considered the largest in the world. The hoist is expected to be operational by early next year. Pictured is the hoist as it lifts a vessel during the testing.

Dude, it's a model.

All the towers are going to look different as individual plots have been sold to different developers. Do you really think that what you see in the models is what you get? Ofcourse not, it's just a depiction of what the end product might be like.

Well, I was kinda going off with what I saw happen to the palm jumeira and how they basically turned the prawns into a very typical suburbia with only 4-6 different styles of houses and what should have been a magnificent trunk with UNIQUE architecture but has the exact same apartment complexes lining the whole thing. So I actually did think those were real.
