A question about the original stadium: In the 1950s and 1960s, the old stadium sat 35,000. What did the stadium look like then compared to its current situation, which camer to existance in 1971?

First there was overgrown grass in the playing area of the Verdao, now the same situation happens in the Fonte Nova.

That gap is kept to preserve the view of some lake to the south, should have just expanded the lower tier of the old stadium to cover that open end.

And it looks like they had imploded the dome roof of the gymnasium.

Better be careful with that opening, as it looks as though some misfired shots could be kicked all the way out of the stadium!

Are they dismantling this by "hand"? In America, lots of stadium demolitions are done by implosions...see below

I wish the upper tier of the old stadium could be imploded instead of a dismantling.

The upper tier will be imploded. The forecast for the implosion is August 14th.

A pic of the Fonte Nova Stadium before the upper tier was added, from the Brazilian Forum:

Doesn't look like 35,000, looks like 65,000 rather.

As you see there still is enough upper tier to implode.

I hope they will demolish all those old, ugly houses behind the stadium.

An implosion of this structure is a joke. It's counterproductive. It's only 10 meters high. Tearing it down with a n excavator would be 10 times faster.

And where those people would live? Brazil won the right to be the host but we still have many problems to solve that wont be solved until 2014, our favelas and poor houses are one of then, we shouldn´t hide the problem.
