Can there be a airport constructed in the south which would be feasable?

Once past the recession and once critical political, social and infrastructural issues of the country are dealt with, is it possible that a southern airport can be built.

Location:
Relatively flat area of land with good transportation links close to the centre of great economic activity in the south(San Fernando) but yet with a decent amount of room for future expansion.
Personally I think that the Penal/Debe area would be a prime location as it incorporates all these primary points.

The Solomon Hochoy Highway will be extended south and will traverse this area meaning people in both the vicinity e.g. San Fernando/Point Fortin and the north will have easy access to this airport.

With the construction of a new southern freeway in an easterly direction soon a southern east-west corridor will become a reality and will be in need of air transportation. As this highway will be linked to the SHH as part of the new national network of highways the airport would be easily accessed by those from the Princes Town-Mayaro corridor.

The rapid rail is soon to be constructed and once running it will terminate in the south near San Fernando, with bus shuttles/possible extension of the rapid rail to the airport it would be easily accessed from those in central and north Trinidad.

The rise in use of the water taxi service has called for the acquisition of four new fast ferries. These take people directly from Port of Spain to San Fernando. Again with frequent bus shuttles from the centre of San Fernando to the airport location will make the airport easily accessible and increase its popularity- with so many transportation alternatives leading to it which would be on a totally different level when compared to Piarco International Airport along the overcrowded east-west corridor.

'Airport Catchment Area'
Starting out as a regional airport would be the most sensible option but with a long term objective of reaching international airport of choice in Trinidad and Tobago for both passengers and airlines.

The possibility of a city airport for Port of Spain is planned, with the construction of this airport in the south an extensive domestic flight network can be created linking the north, south and Tobago.

With the proximity of the oil refinery to this airport a pipeline could be more easily constructed to this location than that of the Piarco International airport and thus making it a hub of choice.

The issue of distance should not be a problem as the two largest airports in the UK, London heathrow(2nd busiest airport in the world (international passengers)) and London gatwick(world's busiest 1 runway airport) are 41.91km apart a distance of what would be 10km less than that of these two airports in Trinidad.

do you think anybody will build it jus because of these 10km? i dont think so

Well its merely an idea and I do think it would prove feasible even if the airport was to start as a small turbo prop airport to deal with domestic flights and regional flights and in the longterm be expanded for international traffic. Plus the example given was just what i said it was-AN EXAMPLE for people who want to throw the idea out because of distance(which they assume to be too close) when the two largest and busiest airports in the UK have a distance which is less.

I think it is a very good idea! Right now that very long and good runway at Piarco is great but God forbid it gets damaged by an accident, Trinidad is left without any long distance travel. This is going to be remedied by another runway (hopefully a parallel one to the north) in time to come.
However, with hope of hosting major international events and a possible future hub of the Caribbean to South America and Africa, it would be great planning for the future.

Thank you and yes exactly vitasjm! This is a project for the future! So the runway planned at Piarco will be parallel?! That means it may well have to go over the airport road. I would love to see that!
