'Biggest' Apple store opens its doors

The largest Apple store in the world openshas opened its doors for the first time in London's Covent Garden.

Set in the heart of one of London's busiest shopping districts, the new store is Apple's 28th in the UK and its 300th worldwide.

Ron Johnson, Apple's senior vice president of retail, said: "Every time we make a product, we try and better what came before it, we tried to do the same with our stores and this is what we have done here.

"It is our most historic store, we've spent a lot of time refurbishing the building, retaining its original features and giving it an Apple spin."

The Grade II listed building was restored using English oak and York stone. Floating glass staircases, exposed brickwork and a large skylight complete the refurbishment.

The first customer arrived at 10am on Friday - 24 hours early - to secure her place at the front of the queue. International law student Rose Williams from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania said she used the time to brush up on her studies.

"I brought along two law books," said the 29-year-old. "But with all the people wanting to talk to me I've not had much chance to read them. I'm hoping to buy an iPhone and maybe an iPad - I might treat myself to both."

Apple has employed 300 staff to deal with the expected crowds, swelled with the promise of more iPhones and iPads in stock than anywhere else in the world.

So far this year nearly 150 million people have visited Apple stores in ten countries including the US, UK, Italy, Australia, Canada, Japan, China, Switzerland, Germany and France. However, London's Regent Street store is Apple's busiest.

PARIS APPLE STORE OF OPÉRA GARNIER



Making a major departure from its usual design, Apple today inaugurated its all new Paris Opera Store. This store is situated just across the street, from the iconic Opera House in the romantic city of Paris, France. Named as Apple Opera Store, the design is a radical departure from the usual Apple Stores that you might have seen around the world. Moved by the romantic architectural beauty and culture of Paris, this new Apple Store does not include any of the usual architectural features of Apple’s previous stores that you might have seen.







According to ifoAppleStore, the space is surprisingly small, taking up just 50 feet of the 115-foot face of the building along Rue Halévy. The space represented by two window bays on the right and one on the left of the front doors are used for other purposes, chopping square-footage from the retail space. Inside, the stainless steel and glass are gone, replaced entirely by marble, wrought-iron, stone and wood that match the features and colors of the existing building. Overhead lighting fixtures hang from the ceiling, a significant departure from Apple’s proven architectural design.

Apple opened in september the 2 first stores in Spain in 2 malls La Maquinista (Barcelona) and Madrid (Xanadú), but now will open 2 more Apple Stores in the city centers:

Anyhow, I find New York's 5th Avenue and Shanghai's Apple Store to be the most impressive. However, they seem to be the most busiest as well.

I Think Shanghai and NYC are the greatest stores of Apple cause they have the same design!!! They should do thid kind of stores in the most important citys in the worls like Tokio, Frankfurt, Dubai, Singapur and some others.

well you just surprise me, I thought most people would at least stand in such a line for once. I've seen lots of times people line up when new iphones/gadgets/video games are released. some even have tailgate parties when waiting in lines. Or check out the bestbuy stores on black Fridays in the states. I've tried once only for the sake of it, and that is something I don't wanna do again.

I am glad that there is an apple store in my small town. It is always filled with customers, but I don't really see any long lines.

all the apple stores in Vancouver are inside malls - so pretty dull - but there is talk that they will open a flagship store in the coming year or so...
