M2 Yerevan - Iran

Here are some pics of the M2 from Yerevan southbound towards Iran. The serie doesn't go all the way to the Iranian border though.

Is the Armenian population large enough to justify the construction of a decent motorway?

Yerevan has a population of 1.1 million, and has several 2x2 roads out of the city, which would not comply to modern motorway standards, but can be considered as one.

Considering nearly all borders are closed (except for Iran, I believe), there isn't much through traffic. The borders with Azerbaijan and Turkey are closed since the early 90's. Armenia is economically quite isolated and can be considered a rather poor country (it's not Africa though). It maintains good relations with nearly all countries in the world, except Turkey and Azerbaijan. As far as I know, AZ and ARM are still in near-war relations. Armenia is also culturally interesting, as it's a near 100% christian orthodox country surrounded mostly by islamic countries.

Fistful it is not religion topic. But I have to reply to this because it is disinformation. Secondly armenia has very good relationship with Islamic Iran. It has not very good relationship with Christian Georgia. Armenia isolated itself by occupying 20 % of neighbor country Azerbaijan territory. Azerbaijan still suffering from this conflict there are 1,000 000 displaced people living in bad condition.

Well, I didn't connect the religion thing with the relations with it's neighbors, right? I said ARM has closed borders with AZ and TR and open borders with Iran.

Turkey and Armenia are expected to establish diplomatic relations next week, ending almost 20 years of bad relations. Border openings might follow, though that is not clear as of yet.

Someone needs to get some geography lessons.

Its Azerbaijan and Georgia whos partially in Europe as both countries has territority north to Big Caucasus range, Armenia are totally in Asia since Armenia has no Big Caucasus range in its territority, not even close. Armenia are only politically Europe, Azerbaijan and Georgia are territorially too.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe

Europe according to a widely accepted definition is shown in green (countries sometimes associated with European culture in dark blue, Asian parts of European states in light blue).

Armenia is not really a country where a lot happens... road-wise. Over a third of the population (total: 2.9 million) lives in the capital Yerevan, so it's not like they're planning a lot more motorways. Besides that, some important connections are already 4-lane divided highways.

Still, I hope for a Yerevan - Tbilisi motorway in the future. Maybe something to Iran as well.

Is it true that the borders between Armenia and Turkey are now open?

Interestingly, Google Maps suggests this route between London and Tehran:
