This video documents the story of the Strong Island exhibition at Portsmouth's Round Tower which took place earlier this year. It is a testament to the vitality of the creative movement in Portsmouth which is going from strength to strength.

Liverpool Titanic sinking centenary will see giant mechanical puppet of little girl take to city streets

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

A GIANT mechanical puppet of a little girl will honour the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic as the centrepiece of a huge street art exhibition next year that will be bigger than the giant Capital of Culture spider.

The three-day event – part of the city’s activities to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic – will be biggest of its kind in the UK in 2012.

The breathtaking street spectacular, named Sea Odyssey, will cost up to £2m and has been produced specifically for Liverpool by renowned experts Royal De Luxe (RDL).

Claire McColgan, director of Culture Liverpool, the city council’s events department, said: “Events don’t come much bigger than the Sea Odyssey.

“We know it will once again thrust Liverpool into the cultural spotlight.

“This is a human story of love told in giant form, and it won’t just engage the city but will capture the imagination of the nation.”

From Friday, April 20 to Sunday, April 22, 2012, a visually stunning free event involving the Little Girl Giant will take over the city, telling a story inspired by the Titanic.

Key city spaces will become focal points in a moving story of love, family and communication.

The council said it is the most complex event the city has ever staged, and will involve hundreds of people in its planning and execution.

It is hoped the event will attract hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city.

Liverpool council leader Joe Anderson said: “This will be a magical piece of theatre, the likes of which many people will never have seen before. To work with such a world-renowned company as Royal De Luxe is a real coup for Liverpool, and it’s wonderful we can mark this important anniversary with an unforgettable event.”

The city has been in talks with RDL’s artistic director and founder, Jean-Luc Courcoult, since 2006 about creating the spectacle.

On a visit to Liverpool, he was inspired by an emotional letter he saw in the Maritime Museum written by a young girl whose father was a passenger on the Titanic’s tragic maiden voyage.

As a result, the idea for Liverpool’s “Sea Odyssey” was born.

The giant girl has only been seen once before in the UK, when she wowed 1.5m people in London at the Sultan’s Elephant event in 2006.

Mr Courcoult said: “Liverpool for me stands out as an island in its own right within a larger island.

“Passions for football, the revolutionary music and poetry of The Beatles and the legendary story of the Titanic give the city a strong, emblematic identity and the people a compelling warmth which pulls me to them.”

Liverpool council is currently working to secure sponsorship for the event.

The European Regional Development Fund and the Arts Council England have already committed money.

Sea Odyssey is the final event which will use European legacy funding from the city’s Capital of Culture Year, in 2008.

It is the latest in a string of popular street art events that have wowed Liverpool audiences.

In 2008, during Capital of Culture, La Machine took over the city by bringing the 50ft La Princesse spider to the streets.

La Machine was created by Royal De Luxe’s rivals, Artichoke.

A giant mechanical puppet of a lost little girl will lead a spectacular street theatre event to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Titanic tragedy.

Huge mechanical puppets will walk around Liverpool City Centre "for the most magical piece of theatre ever seen in the North of England" from 20-22 April 2012.

The £2m three-day event will be the largest of its kind in the country next year before the London Olympic Games begin on 27th July.

Sea Odyssey tells the story of a girl who wakes up in Stanley Park, between Anfield and Goodison, and starts to search for her long-lost uncle who is looking for her on the other side of the city.

Eventually reunited in a extravagant climax, the girl and her uncle sail away on a boat from the Pier Head.

The spectacular has been produced by French expert puppeteers and street theatre experts Royal De Luxe.

The puppet of the girl has already made her debut on the streets of London, where she was watched by 1.5m people during the Sultan's Elephant event.

Artistic Director Jean-Luc Courcoult was inspired by a letter he saw in Liverpool's Maritime Museum written by a young girl whose father was aboard the Titanic.

The "unsinkable ship" hit an iceberg on 15th April 1912 and 1,513 men, women and children perished in the Atlantic. Of the 114 crew members from Liverpool 87 of them died and just 705 people survived.

That is until you speak with individuals in various pubs. You then will find that, not unlike racism in the US South, the religious bigotry and sectarian hatreds are still there, percolating just under the surface.

You're one tourist, the majority like seeing them. They actually rather see the historic and sectarian murals instead of the new cultural ones that are replacing them.

Liverpool - Royal De Luxe - Sea Odyssey

In April, the world's greatest street theatre company, Royal De Luxe, will bring their Giants to Liverpool in one of the UK's most spectacular events. Sea Odyssey is a magical tale of love, loss and reunion played out on a gigantic scale. It will take place in key city spaces, moving across North Liverpool and the city centre, wowing the hundreds of thousands of people who are expected to descend on the city over the three days.

I was pleasantly astounded (right word?) by the giant puppet show and the awesome horse race last week. Will go and watch next one in 2013.

Bouncy Stonehenge on Glasgow Green, anyone? Looks very fun!

This is part of the GI festival, there's a few weird and wonderful installations of art around Glasgow at the moment, including a giant Tiramisu in the GoMA.
