Some areas far from Tbilisi have very bad roads. Other than that no problem driving there really.

Thanks, I am aware of that therefore was thinking of driving 4x4 Grand Vitara. How about Turkish part especially north-east?

Yes. It is funny that former USSR countries still keep most USSR-style signs, but from such details you can recognize in which of these countries you are Merging sign in Georgia, river / lake or speed limit sign in Latvia, built-up area sign & some exit signs on expressways in Estonia ...

Nice pictures, but I see you didn't venture into areas with truly bad roads.

Or maybe they have been rebuilt since I was last there (2011)?

S1, Kutaisi

Prime Minister opened the bypass road

I would like you to know that in two years we managed to construct an express highway of 55 kilometers when till 2012 for 8 years it was managed to open only 70 kilometers on express highway, - the Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili stated at the ceremony of opening Kutaisi bypass of 32 kilometers.

In his speech the head of the Government thanked those people that were involved in the process of road construction and emphasized the contribution of Japanese Government and Italian Embassy to the project implementation. According to Irakli Garibashvili the bypass is the most important part of the large project of east and west express highway, and the completion of the road will support creation of new jobs and additional income for the population which is due to the infrastructure developed along the highway.

So, the U/C section of the S1 will be a 2x2 motorway with emergency lane, right?
